Family sessions aren't only about getting everyone together for the big family photo. I always love taking a few minutes to photograph the kids individually too, especially when they're this little.

Because babies have absolutely NO respect for how quickly they're supposed to grow up.

He is clearly VERY pleased with himself, and Mom's face pretty much says it all.

These are some of my favorite images from family sessions. Not necessarily the perfectly posed, everyone-looking-at-me photos, but the little in-between moments that actually feel like them.

Because one day he won't fit quite so perfectly in her lap.

And those little baby toes won't be quite so little. 🥹

Okay... now I've made myself sad.

This sweet family met me at Huntington Beach State Park bright and early, and Mother Nature absolutely understood the assignment.

Pastel sky ✔️
Quiet beach ✔️
Beautiful soft light ✔️
Two little girls actually snuggling Mom and Dad at the SAME TIME ✔️

Sunrise sessions really are something special. The beach is quieter, the temperatures are usually a little kinder during the summer, and that soft morning light can be absolutely gorgeous.

And once we're finished?

You still have the whole beach day ahead of you.

Just three people and one very important little guy in the middle.

I love this family portrait from DeBordieu Colony because it's simple, relaxed and all about them. The soft colors, sandy dunes and sea oats gave us such a beautiful backdrop without taking anything away from the family.

And when you have a baby this little, these photos become even more special with time. They grow SO ridiculously fast.

One day he's sitting between Mom and Dad in the sand... and somehow five minutes later you're buying school supplies.

Proof that sisters really DO like each other.

At least long enough for me to take the picture.

I absolutely love sibling portraits during family sessions, especially when the kids are still little. We get the whole family together, of course, but I always want photos of the relationships within that family too.

And these two at sunrise?

Bare feet in the water.

Those matching little buns.

Big sister's arm wrapped around little sister.

And that gorgeous soft morning light at Huntington Beach State Park.

Those little baby faces don't stay little nearly long enough.

I love getting in close during family sessions and capturing portraits like this one from DeBordieu Colony. The beach is still there in the background, but the real focus is exactly where it should be, on the three of them and this sweet stage of their family.

Beach sessions don't have to be all wide shots with the ocean behind you. A mix of those beautiful coastal portraits and close-up family moments gives you a gallery that tells so much more of the story.

Small weddings can hold some of the biggest moments.

This intimate wedding at Myrtle Beach State Park gave us the chance to step away from the beach for a few portraits beneath the park's beautiful trees. I absolutely love the contrast of his Navy whites, her lace wedding dress and all that gorgeous greenery surrounding them.

One of the things I love about photographing smaller weddings and elopements is having time to focus on the couple without all the craziness that can come with a huge wedding day.

Simple. Personal. And completely about the two of them.

When there's a baby involved, sometimes the BEST family photos happen when we forget about posing altogether.

This little one had Mom and Dad completely wrapped around that tiny finger during their family session at Litchfield by the Sea. A little flying through the air, lots of smiles and one very happy baby made this one of those moments I absolutely love to capture.

Family photos with babies are about so much more than getting everyone to look at the camera. It's the way you play with them, the way they light up when they see you and all those tiny interactions that change way too quickly.

PSA: If Grandma and Grandpa are coming on the family vacation, GET THIS PICTURE.

Seriously.

Get the big whole-family photo, of course. Get each individual family. Get the siblings and cousins and all the other combinations.

But then give me Grandma and Grandpa with ALL their grandbabies.

Because these three aren't going to stay this size. That baby isn't always going to fit on Grandpa's arm. The bigger kids will somehow become teenagers approximately 14 minutes from now.

And years down the road, nobody is going to care whether everyone's outfit was perfect or whether somebody's hair was blowing the wrong direction.

They're going to care that they have THIS.

Three grandkids. Two grandparents. One photograph I would absolutely print.
