Even bucks need a way to beat the July heat.

Watching this buck cool off in the water through the thermal camera in a residential area was an incredible sight. Summer flights continue to reveal how bucks use the landscape.

Big bucks don’t stop moving just because it’s hot.

This velvet buck slipped out of the cattails for a midday snack, giving us another piece of the puzzle.

Summer thermal flights help us understand where deer spend their time during the warmest months, how they use cover, and where their summer range is before the season ever begins.

Every flight adds valuable information. The more you know about a property year-round, the better prepared you’ll be when it matters most.

After feeding somewhere nearby, this buck found the perfect spot to spend the morning in the cattails.

This is why thermal surveys are so valuable. They don’t just show what deer are on a property. They reveal how they’re using it, helping identify bedding areas and movement patterns without disturbing the herd.

And let’s be honest… seeing antlers really starting to take shape never gets old.

+2 to the count. 🦌🦌
Not every thermal flight is about antlers. Sometimes it’s about finding the future of the herd. These two fawns were safely hidden in the cover, exactly where mom wanted them.

Summer foliage definitely adds a challenge during thermal herd surveys. The thermal signatures are still there when conditions are right, but getting a visual on a deer through thick leaf cover can take some work. Then you spot a tank of a buck, and suddenly the struggle is worth it.
