The steamer John M. Nichol ran aground on December 13, 1906, following a departure from St. Ignace, MI, to Gladstone, where it encountered a severe gale with 50 mph winds that resulted in considerable flooding. Captain J.M. Saunders had difficulty maintaining control before beaching the vessel on Summer Island. The crew endured extreme cold, resulting in several cases of frostbite before their rescue by two local fishermen. The rescue occurred just before the vessel's aft section separated. The cargo was salvaged the following year, with all valuable materials recovered. The wreckage is situated in shallow waters on the eastern side of Summer Island. With Jacqueline Bishop

Submechanophobia is the fear of manmade objects underwater. I definitely have a bit of “submechanophobia” when it comes to Great Lakes Shipwrecks. ⚓️🌊

I free dove wrecks this summer in Alpena, Michigan’s Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, a protected underwater area filled with shipwrecks.

You can snorkel, free dive, and dive many of the wrecks, with most of them buoyed thanks to NOAA Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary.

The propeller wreck was the ship, City of Alpena, which sank in 1880. ⚓️

The big scary wreck is the freighter Nordmeer, which is a more recent shipwreck that sank in 1966 just off the shores of Lake Huron. And she’s big...
472 ft big. 😳😰🚢

Looking for cleanups this Earth Month in Northern Michigan? 🌎🚮

Great Lakes Great Responsibility is an organization I’m especially proud to be part of, not just as a Board member, but because of the real impact they’re making across our watersheds. The goal is to remove 1 million pieces of trash and we’re already at 661,215 pieces collected and counting.
