NEW CANAAN — Town officials on Tuesday voted to suspend New Canaan Fire Chief Albert Bassett after an investigation uncovered ethical concerns, but stopped short of revealing the nature of the issues at a special meeting.
The New Canaan Fire Commission, which oversees the New Canaan Fire Department, voted unanimously to suspend Bassett for five days without pay effective Nov. 17.
The vote came after the three-member body met behind closed doors for about 20 minutes during a special meeting Tuesday night to discuss ethical concerns raised in an investigation report.
The commission did not publicly outline the findings of the probe and did not immediately respond to a request to release the report.
Bassett, a former Norwalk firefighter who was named New Canaan’s interim fire chief in 2021 before being elevated to the full-time position, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
