What a day it was yesterday...after braving the crowds at Letchworth Park last Thursday and then chasing the side by side run of the big boy 4014 and the little boy 2102 on Sunday, I was in two minds whether I wanted to brave the crowds of Scranton again today. I had bought the ticket of nominal $1 to reserve my spot already, but couldn't make up my mind. I got in my car anyhow...my car knew exactly what I wanted and was very happy to oblige. I reached well ahead of my time slot. As I walked up to the Steamtown, There wa a sea of people everywhere...the had about 25,000 people by 11:30AM....3 hour wait in the 2 mile line of thousands of people later, I was still there...I wanted immerse myself in this once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the history...finally we were let inside where the line snaked another half a mile before the Big Boys 4014 and 4012 greeted us with enthusiasm. Being part of the history with just the sights and sounds of the by-gone era was emotional and exhilarating at the same time...and to top it all off, a bald Eagle flew right over the Big Boy...by the time I looked up, he had flown away....so I didn't see it...but I was there... I was part of it... and that was enough...It cannot get more American than this...

Union Pacific's Big Boy 4014 weighing 1.2-million-pounds goes over the Genesee Bridge in Letchworth State Park today...wish there was huge plume of white steam as it went over the bridge though...
Built in 1941, in Schenectady, NY, he traveled over 1 million miles mainly in Wyoming and Utah, and retired in 1961. To celebrate the nation's 250th Anniversary, he is traveling west coast to east coast making several whistle stops along the way to Philadelphia for July 4th...

A blast from the past...two years ago today we were dazzled by the Aurora Borealis...the solar flares...the cloudy skies...the rain...the fog...the chase to find a clear location...and finally the jaw dropping view of the dancing lights that twirled all the way up overhead...and the milky way quietly joining the party...it was out of the world experience...

Incidentally, tonights full moon is a micro moon (as opposed to super moon)...meaning it is farthest from earth in its orbit. Second micro moon (blue moon) will be on May 31...
