One of the most adaptable and powerful raptors in North America—equally at home in deep wilderness or right on the edge of our communities.

What always stands out to me isn’t just their strength, but their awareness. Even in complete stillness, they’re tracking everything—sound, movement, space.

Out of the Sage

This is the same young grizzly that crossed the river and ran hard into the sage after sensing danger behind him. We never saw what triggered it.

When he came back into view, the urgency had shifted. He was still alert, still measuring the air, but there was composure again.

I overlooked this image last year. Looking at it now, I see the density of his October coat, the strength in his shoulder, the sharp glint in his eye.

Sometimes the photograph waits for us to be ready to see it.

The snow was coming down hard enough that most movement along the river had slowed. The light flattened the hills and turned everything quiet.

Then he came low over the water, wings wide and deliberate, completely unbothered by the weather.

This is winter without romance. No shelter. No extras. Just survival, one mouthful at a time.
