Why black and white Personality Portraits?

When I remove the distractions of color, what remains is personality.

The missing teeth.
The serious expression.
The confidence.
The curiosity.

That is why I love creating black and white Personality Portraits.

These children's portraits are not about perfect smiles or carefully practiced poses. They are about preserving who your child is right now, exactly as they are in this moment.

Every Personality Portrait Session lasts just a few minutes, but the resulting images often become some of a family's most treasured photographs.

My final Personality Portrait Studio Session in the Wayland studio is June 19, and a few spots remain.

I feel like this time of year does not ask us to slow down…it quietly demands it, whether we want to or not.

The snow has been piling up for what feels like months. Daylight hours and family hours barely overlap. We find ourselves inside more than we may want, yet somehow this has created the space for my family to settle into a quieter rhythm of home. Last night, I played Monopoly with my girls for the very first time and they kept saying, “This is so fun!” Not because we did anything extraordinary, but because we were simply together with nowhere else we had to be.

Winter has a way of gifting us slower days. Cozier spaces. More time at home. The world outside feels paused, while everything inside your home feels just a bit more important.

It is also what makes this season such a beautiful time for an in-home newborn session. These sessions are not about braving the cold or waiting for perfect weather. They are about leaning into the comfort of where you already are.

If you are expecting a baby, or simply finding yourself tucked into this slower season at home, there is so much beauty here worth remembering. Not in spite of winter, but because of it.

Years from now, I think these are the days we will miss the most. The cozy ones. The ordinary ones. The ones where everyone was home, together.

Winter is not a season to wait out. If you are expecting or enjoying these slower days at home with your family, this is a meaningful time to photograph it.
