Town of Clarkstown Restores Historic Nanuet Cemetery With NYS Grant
Under New York State law, when a Cemetery Association becomes abandoned it defaults to the local municipality. New York State has an abandoned cemetery fund, that allows for a one time disbursement to assist municipalities that have “inherited“ an abandoned cemetery. The Town of Clarkstown received over $200,000 in grants for restoration work at the Nanuet cemetery, which is located next to the Highview cemetery on Middletown Road and Church Street.
Over 200 stones have been restored, many are historic. Including David Demarest, who was killed in the Civil War at the Battle of Gettysburg. His body was removed and buried 10 years later in Nanuet. In addition brush was removed and trees trimmed.
These individuals who have made many contributions to our country and county, and have passed on are now in an appropriate and respectful resting place. It was very powerful for me personally to document the transformation of the cemetery. A great job by the Town of Clarkstown and may all those in the cemetery continue to rest in peace.
