I found this mask on the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. Its expression stopped me, and I found myself looking past the obvious jester details—the pointed cap and little bells—to the face itself.

It has a theatrical quality, but it doesn’t feel simply cheerful. There’s something watchful and mysterious about it. I interpreted the image with a painterly technique because I wanted to bring out that character rather than make a straightforward record of the object.

I like artwork that leaves a little room for the viewer. A mask can suggest humor, performance, disguise, or the person behind the role, and I’m not sure there needs to be just one answer.

These mushrooms were growing out of a drainage hole in a flower pot on my screened lanai. Nothing particularly exotic about the setting—plastic pot, concrete floor, an overcast day.
But the mushrooms had this upward, sculptural sweep, and the soft light brought out the detail in their gills. I made a monochrome blue treatment to quiet the everyday surroundings and keep the attention on the forms themselves.
I like photographs that start with something ordinary and offer a different way of seeing it. This one still reads as mushrooms, but it also becomes a study in shape, space, and quiet transformation.

Busts have always caught my attention. My grandmother was a seamstress of sorts, and she had a dress form made for her own size and shape. It lived in her attic, collecting dust and giving my cousins and me plenty to wonder about.
Years later, I was photographing old artifacts that had been turned into art when this moss-covered bust appeared. The little blossoms used as buttons caught my eye, and the whole piece brought that attic memory back. I photographed it for the shoot, but I wanted to interpret it more freely afterward.
I worked the background heavily and treated the texture on the body more delicately. That contrast is a big part of what I like about the final image: the background gives it a theatrical presence, while the surface details keep it tactile and close to the original object.
I think of it as a meeting point between dressmaking, nature, and memory—an unusual object that has become its own kind of decorative art.
If you’d like to spend a little more time with it, you can find the artwork in my Etsy shop.

I shot this on the beach in Naples, after a friend had just walked toward the water. I simply knelt down and caught the trail of footprints. There isn't a person in the photograph, but you know someone was there as the sand kept the record for little while.
It was a somewhat windy day, which you can see in the waves. They break on the sandbar, though, so by the time they reach the shore they've softened quite a bit.
I like photographs that leave a little room for the viewer to finish the story. This one does that for me.

I followed a long, winding road down to the very tip of the Sorentine peninsula. I arrived at the villa just as the light was almost gone and remember looking at these stairs and wondering where they led. The flowers framed them so naturally that the whole scene felt like a painting.

That memory is really what stayed with me. The villa is part of the picture, but the stairs are what give it a story, an invitation to move forward and see what is around the next turn.

I think that's one of the reasons travel photographs can become more meaningful with time. They stop being just records of where we were and start carrying the feeling of who we were when we were there.

If you enjoy artwork that brings a little European travel atmosphere into a room, you can take a look at it on my Etsy store.

I’ve always liked old objects that still show evidence of the people who used them.
This armoire was handmade in 1882. The original paint and latch are still there, while the little gold tassel was added much later simply because it seemed to fit. It isn’t a door handle, although it certainly gives that impression.
At a certain time of year, morning light comes through the second-story windows and falls across the weathered blue surface. The deep shadows, the old wood, and that small warm tassel gave me what I was after here; a small piece of a historic household object that still feels like it belongs to a living home, not a museum.

I was redoing our guest room from ceiling to floor, including the attached bathroom. The room was taking on a warm, classic feel, but there was almost no wall space left after the windows, closet, headboard and mirror were accounted for.

There was one small bit of wall near the entrance that needed something.

I found a Spotted Canna Lily with colors that echoed the room. The petals had their own texture of color, and the spiky leaves added another kind of texture. I applied strong painterly effects to the background, then softened the treatment toward the center so more of the true flower remained visible.

It worked perfectly in that spot.

What I like about the piece is that the story isn't really about finding a place to hang a flower photograph. It's about using color, texture and a little artistic interpretation to make an existing room feel finished.

That's a role I think artwork can play particularly well — it doesn't always have to be the loudest thing in a room. Sometimes it just has to belong there.

You can see the artwork on Etsy if you'd like to take a closer look.

There was a huge Magnolia tree at the end of my driveway in Marietta, Georgia.

In late spring, the white blossoms would appear among the leaves, and from a distance the tree looked almost like a Christmas tree peppered with white lights.

I had wanted to photograph one for a while, but there was something else going on. When you pass the same thing every day, it can become invisible. You stop noticing how special it is.

So one day, I stopped and started looking closely.

I found this blossom at a moment I particularly liked—the petals were still holding their structure, but the outer petals were beginning to give way. It was midday under an overcast sky, which gave me soft light with just enough edge to define the flower.

I knew I would apply my painterly treatment, and that became part of the way I wanted to preserve the moment. The result feels less like a conventional botanical photograph and more like a painted botanical study.

The Magnolia Blossom is now available on my Etsy shop if you'd like to see it as finished wall art.

I had been fascinated by solar eclipses for years, going back to a time when I noticed the strange curved shadows an eclipse made on the ground.

For this one, I decided I wanted to photograph totality properly. I researched the path, then went a step further and found the exact coordinates for the point of Maximum eclipse. Unfortunately, that point was in the middle of a rural road.

With thousands of people heading into the path, parking and lodging were becoming difficult and expensive. I eventually found an Amish farm that rented space in its pasture, about a quarter mile from Maximum eclipse. That turned out to be a pretty good solution.

We arrived three hours early and set up. There was a threat of clouds, so there was still some question about whether all the planning would pay off.

As the moon covered more of the sun, the crowd of roughly 5,000 people gradually became more attentive. Then it got cooler and darker. The field went quiet.

When the last sliver disappeared, the black disk of the moon appeared against the sun's soft corona. The reaction was immediate. People yelled, screamed, cried, and some even dropped to their knees.

I remember thinking I could almost hear a roar coming from the sky.

Keeping my attention on the camera took some concentration, but the preparation paid off. I came away with a series of images, and this is one of my favorites because you can see the solar flares peeking out around the edge of the moon against the feathery corona.

It's a photograph of an extraordinary moment, but the part I like most is knowing how much had to happen before I ever pressed the shutter.

If you'd like to see the finished artwork, it's now on my Etsy store.

I walked onto the beach in Positano before the day had fully unfolded.

The umbrellas were still empty, standing in quiet rows while above them, the hillside climbed toward the sky in that unmistakable Positano mix of color, architecture, and lived-in geometry.

I was struck by the juxtaposition of the Order below against the Chaos above.

I also loved the feeling of peace and quiet before the beach filled with people and voices in the air.
