Happy Friday all,
I was scheduled to be on a boat off the coast of Maine photographing puffins on Saturday. The weather didn't get the memo and with rain and heavy winds on the forecast, the trip was cancelled. As I had a hotel booked for 2 nights and couldn't cancel I was making the 3 1/2 hour trip north no matter what. There always shots to be found on the coast. Friday morning came with 35mph winds and I was glad to be on dry land!

Part of my backup plan was to try and find a spot to capture the alewife run and find some eagles and osprey dining on sushi. The fish ladder in Damariscotta was a bust but a man suggested I try a spot in Warren. It was very overcast but the rain held. I was the only car in the lot when I arrived, making me the brightest or dimmest photographer there. I walked to the bridge and scanned the trees. I immediately found 2 eagles is a sea of translucent green leaves. White heads shining like a 200 watt bulb. I waited patiently for flight shots but apparently they had caught the early bird special and were too full to fly. I did get one of my favorite eagle shots ever but that will be next week's photo.

Patience was rewarded with a trio of osprey who took turns diving for alewife. The action was fast and challenging. Many hundreds of almost shots. Each dive was a chance to practice improving my skill and I got some keepers. One of the osprey had a few swings and misseds before snagging a fish which gave me much needed extra practice. Shout out to my PT Kristine who helped me be able to get back shooting. My wrist is getting closer to 100% all the time.

Weekend stats - road time 7 hrs TH, 12 hrs FR and 11 hr SA. 2200 shots. First time I have been able to do that in 3 months. I was up at 2:45 am Saturday to drive an hour to shoot sunrise at Pemaquid Point. Grateful to be out doing what I love. Sunday was get to know your recliner day.

Have a great weekend!

I was supposed to be on a boat photographing puffins on Saturday but rain, 35 mph gusts and clouds like these made the captain decide it wasn't a good day to reboot Gilligan's Island. It was a fine day to be a landlubber.

The Friday Photo 05.29.26
Happy Friday all,
For me, there are two quintessential symbols of freedom in America. The eagle and the horse. I can't take enough photos of either animal. For the last 4 years I have had the privilege of witnessing in person the spring run of the herd at Roads End Farm. The experience is a feast for the senses of sight, sound, touch and smell. It's held annually in the second half of May. The herd has been kept in the upper fields so the soggy valley grass doesn't get all torn up. Tom sends out a notice of the run and people travel great distances to be part of it.

The team at the farm had the farm dressed up the farm for visitors. The fields were mowed and chairs have thoughtfully been lined up for viewing. The fields were emerald green and filled with the fragrance of spring. In the corral you could see the stirring of the horses, trotting back and forth in anticipation, like 3rd graders waiting to be let out for recess. Along the fence, former riding academy campers were retelling stories of lifelong friendships born here at Roads End Farm. Goodwill and positive vibes filled this special place. Tom Woodman, the man who shares this slice of heaven with everyone, signaled to his significant other and partner Alicia up on the hill to call to the herd. As she did so, the horses immediately recognized her call and it was showtime. Chris open the gate and the pent up energy and anticipation of the herd exploded out of the corral and across the field. You could feel the earth move and hear the thunder as they galloped by. It is always a magical moment.

I took a gamble this year and positioned myself up as close to the gate as I could get rather than long shots from the hill. This significantly reduces the window to capture the horses from the front as they charged out of the corral. I had about 20 seconds to get the shots I had in my head. I went with a wider lens to try and get more of the herd and the barn in the composition. My goal was to capture the energy, athleticism and expressions of the horses. If I missed it was wait until next year. I was happy to see images that felt like I captured the spirit of the event.

Hope you all have a great weekend!
