Erythrulose, a sugar found in raspberries, was spotted in a gas and dust cloud near the center of the Milky Way.

Imagine being born, growing old, and dying on the same spaceship, never once setting foot on a planet. That is not science fiction. It is the entire plan behind a starship called Chrysalis.

The concept won the top prize in a global design competition that challenged engineers and architects to design a realistic ship for interstellar travel. The target is Alpha Centauri, our nearest neighboring star system, sitting about 25 trillion miles away. Even for a ship this ambitious, the trip would take roughly 400 years.

That timeline changes everything. Nobody who boards would live to see the destination. Chrysalis is what scientists call a generation ship, a traveling civilization where children are born, grow up, raise their own kids, and pass away, all while the ship sails on. Only distant descendants would ever arrive.

The design itself is staggering. Picture a cylinder around 36 miles long, built like a Russian nesting doll, with layer after layer wrapped around a central core. The whole thing slowly rotates to create artificial gravity. Inner shells hold homes, schools, parks, and hospitals. Outer shells grow food and even preserve tropical and boreal forest environments to keep pieces of Earth alive. The final destination is Proxima Centauri b, a potentially habitable planet waiting at the end.

Here is the human part that lingers. To prepare, the first generations would live in an isolated Antarctic colony for 70 to 80 years, adapting to confined life before anyone ever launched. Population would be carefully planned, kept stable across the centuries.

For now it stays a dream, since the fusion engines it needs do not yet exist. But it is a serious blueprint for how we might one day leave the Sun behind.

Would you board a ship knowing only your great great grandchildren would arrive?

No Pluto? I’m out!

No Pluto? I’m out!

This isn't just a watch. It's a working model of the solar system on your wrist.

Van Cleef & Arpels unveiled the Midnight Planétarium in 2014, and it remains one of the strangest, most beautiful timepieces ever made. The 44mm rose gold case holds six gemstone planets orbiting a solid gold Sun at the center, each one carved from a different stone: serpentine for Mercury, green chloromelanite for Venus, turquoise for Earth, red jasper for Mars, blue agate for Jupiter, and sugilite for Saturn.

Here's the part that makes watchmakers lose their minds: every planet moves at its true real-world orbital speed, scaled down onto the dial.

Mercury completes one full circuit in 88 days.

Venus in 224 days.
Earth in exactly 365 days.
Mars in 687 days.
Jupiter takes nearly 12 years.
Saturn takes just over 29 years to make one full loop around the dial.

So if you had one on your wrist and checked it every single day for three decades, Saturn would only just be finishing its first full orbit.

Time itself is told by a lone rose gold shooting star that sweeps around the outer rim once every 24 hours. No hour hand, no minute hand. Just a star chasing the sky.

Building it took almost three years and nearly 400 individual moving parts, and Van Cleef & Arpels brought in Dutch astronomical watchmaker Christiaan van der Klaauw to help engineer the planetarium module, since nothing like it existed before. There's also a hidden calendar function on the case back that lets the owner see exactly where the planets were on any past date, or where they'll be on any future one, plus a "lucky day" setting tied to Earth's position under the star.
Only a small number are produced each year. Price starts around 250,000 dollars.

Some watches tell you the time. This one tells you where you stand in the universe.

Pluto’s Revenge is more than a story about corporate oppression and escaping a mining colony on Pluto. It’s about family, friendship, grief, hope and discovering who we become when everything we’ve ever known is taken away.
