The Cure's Robert Smith appears on two songs on new Rolling Stones album Foreign Tongues, but it took some resistance before it happened.
Speaking recently on The Rolling Stones' official podcast, Speaking in Tongues, Smith noted how he was invited by producer Andrew Watt to the studio with Mick Jagger, but ultimately didn't want to bother him.
βI know what itβs like being in the studio, particularly when youβre singing,β Smith said. βThe last thing you want is guests. It sounds a bit miserable, but the dynamic and the atmosphere is kind of a really crucial part of what youβre trying to get done. And the worst thing in the world is people bursting in, having a party when youβre trying to do something."
Eventually, though, he convinced himself. "And then time elapsed and I said to Andrew, 'Oh, come on then. Letβs plug a guitar in and Iβll have a go at some of the songs.' So I just started playing and, yeah, one thing led to another.β
You can hear him sing and plays synths on "Never Wanna Lose You" and play guitar on "Divine Intervention" now.
