Driving over Navarre Bridge, on my way to the (Gulf Islands National) Seashore, I couldn’t resist stopping by the pier to snap a few photos. These clouds make the perfect backdrop for our little piece of paradise. The clouds have been absolutely phenomenal lately!

Of all the lightning photos I took last Saturday night, this one is the most “Zen” to me. What was amazing about photographing this storm is after it had moved far out over the gulf the wind calmed, and then stood still. This allowed a 30 second exposure, but with no wind the sea oats are perfectly sharp with no motion blur - rare conditions on the gulf coast… day or night! 🧘

So the last photos of the storm were very exciting and dramatic - the type that gets your heart beating fast! But as the storm drifted further into the gulf, the lightning slowly diminished, thunder became nothing more than a gentle rumble, and the wind became a gentle calm… this was my favorite part of the storm.

This is a repost from that amazing storm we had on Saturday night. I decided to give this photo the processing it deserved in order to bring out the the amazing cloud structure and the waterspout to the left of the lightning bolt. Something else that really caught my eye was the two parallel lines at the top of the cloud. I’m no meteorologist, but I imagine that it’s caused by very fast swirling air in the cloud - I would love for one of you smart meteorologist out there to describe what this phenomenon is in a comment.

I have quite a few lightning photos from yesterday morning, but this one really stood out. This storm was 20+ mile out into the gulf and those cumulonimbus clouds were probably 30,000+ (or 5+ miles) high - so this is one huge, mean looking lightning bolt!!! It looks like the cloud leaned over to zap some unsuspecting victim below… Whew! I’d hate to be on the receiving end of that one! ⚡️

I woke up around 12:30 this morning with lights flashing through my bedroom window. Of course, it was a storm building up right off the coast of Navarre Beach. So I reluctantly got dressed and drove to the seashore. With lightning popping off like fireworks, I spent the next two hours taking pictures of this awesome light show. I didn’t realize it until I returned home is that I also captured a few pics of a waterspout - how lucky is that! You can clearly see it in the top photo, and barely in the second photo. I believe they’re the same waterspout separated by 15 minutes.
