The View from the Avenue

The View from the Avenue I like to take pictures in and around Negaunee, Michigan. I like human interest stories and I like to "interview" people.

I'll post different things, but mostly about activities, events and construction around town with photos to add to the story.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026 at 5:00pm, I was in attendance at the ground breaking of the new Barnes-Hecker Mine Memorial Park.
On November 3, 1926, 51 miners perished in a disastrous flooding of the mine. After nearly 100 years, 43 men are still entombed in the workings of the mine.
Trees will be cleared, roads will be paved and a park with a boardwalk will be created.
A dedication of the park will be held on September 5, 2026!
Pictured with shovels for the groundbreaking from left to right are: Jeremy Laakso; Ely Township Supervisor, Jim Paquette; local historian, Annie Tippett, granddaughter of Walter Tippett, a victim of the disaster, and Glenn Wing, Ely Township Clerk and major organizer.
The weather was pleasant and a big bonus, there were no bugs bothering us!

My View today was of the start of the Ore to Shore 28 mile bicycle race beginning at the Lakeview Elementary School in Negaunee!
I was told there are approximately 1200 racers rarin’ to go.
And a picture of MC Jim Koski!

ISHPEMING, Mich. (WLUC) - Kwik Trip is opening a new location in the city of Ishpeming this year.

TV6 first reported in 2023 that the store will open at the former Camping World property on US-41. According to a Kwik Trip spokesperson, crews plan to begin construction May 19. The spokesperson says construction should wrap up in mid-October and the store will open about a week after construction ends.

This will be the seventh U.P. Kwik Trip location after Bessemer, Ironwood, Kingsford, Iron Mountain, Gwinn and Sands Township.

It is a beautiful morning on the eastern shore of Teal Lake, so I drove down to the shore to watch the start of the 22nd Swim Teal Lake for Diabetes awareness.
I wasn’t able to talk to the timer so I don’t have any stats.
From my pictures I would guess there were about 3 dozen swimmers and more than a dozen canoeists along for support.
This is one of the more pleasant mornings for this swim in recent memory.
They all left at 9:30, heading for the St. Rocco Italian Fest at Al Quall in Ishpeming!
I’m sure they’ll need a cudighi after that swim!

It's been awhile since I posted anything to my page. I haven't travelled anywhere lately, the last time was when I went to see Bailee at her gymnastics meet two months ago.
But the weather is getting nicer, and activities are picking up around town and I'm getting out with the trusty Canon camera.
As we are all aware, repairs to the Vista theater are ongoing. There are a lot of steps which need to be completed to get grants and such for the historical preservation of the old gal.
Part of that is to remove the old metal tiles which were covering the original front of the building so it may be determined if they want to keep the original brickwork exposed, or to restore the metal tiles and reinstall them.
Workmen from Parker and Sons Construction began cleaning under the marquis yesterday, and when I got to town this morning, the tiles had been removed and they were cleaning up.
The tiles are numbered and stored in the "annex" next door to the theater if it is determined that they will be used again.
Here are 8 pictures I took of the guys working this morning.

My View took me to Dublin Avenue to get to Northwood University on Saturday, February 1, 2025, where the beautiful Bailee Rae performed in a USA Gymnastics sanctioned competition.
There were about a dozen teams of girls of all ages and abilities.
Each gymnast performs four disciplines; uneven parallel bars, vault, floor exercise and balance beam.
Bailee did exceptionally well on her floor exercise (FX on the scoreboard). All of the girls from the Marquette Gymnastics club did very well and earned a 2nd place finish.
Here are a bunch of pictures from that competition at Northwood University, home of the Timberwolves.
