I took Kenny to go see the one and only Nikki Lane at Gruene Hall and loved this photo so much I spent all weekend printing it by hand as tri and quadtone Solarfast prints!

It takes 8 negatives and 3 to 4 layers of dye for each prints, with each needing exposed and washed between colors. About 1 to 2 hours per piece, but in the end, you get a wholly unique piece of art that blends photography, printmaking, and painting into one beautiful mess.

Austin Nights on 35mm Welcome back, freaks. I've been careening through the neon-lit streets of Austin, camera in hand, like a woman possessed. I need a few more supplies to arrive in the mail for my next round of CMYK printing tests, so for now, we're exploring a fresh roll

So much effort went into this print; it is so nice to be able to extend my process into analog and alternative printing again.

This is a 6 x 9 Solar Print done with solarfast dye in black on a textured cold pressed watercolor paper.

I calibrated a curve file in Photoshop using chart throb, a free open source script you can run with PS.

I print my own negatives in duplicate and layer them to ensure good density. They're printed with dye on transparency film.

I exposed these in my DIY exposure box that you've seen! It's 100w 365nm and this was a 5 minute exposure.

I do wash in very hot water with the solarfast wash.

Original image was shot on my Canon AE-1 with 50 1.8 on Cinestill 800T.

Next up I'm going to experiment with CMYK and multi color Solarfast prints.

✨ 📸 When Harmon announced their new 35mm color film I immediately bought a roll, excited to support any company bringing new emulsions to the market. I sat back and let everyone share their first attempts, and it became clear immediately that the film had a very narrow latitude for exposure, and seemed to perform best in even lighting ... so of course I decided to shoot my first roll at golden hour in extreme contrast 😅

Final Judgements?

I like it! I think a lot of the problems people have experienced are from the lab scanners going for efficiency and not really fine tuning. I scan at home, and after a lot of trial and error, it really does do better with a black and white film profile since it doesn't have the characteristically orange mask. I found Ferrania FG profiles to be pretty accurate, and when selecting from those, instead of color calibrations, I found I retained MUCH more shadow detail.

Got a new toy to play with, the Reto UWS is a knock off of the Vivitar UWS that you can typically find for ~$20 USD. The plastic lens and cheap lomo 100 film really produces a deeply saturated color palette in sunlight, fun flares, sharp center and steep fall off, heavy vignetting, and more.
