Southern Decadence New Orleans, you never disappoint ✨️
Here are some of my favorite shots from the day...
For the first time in three years, I watched Southern Decadence instead of marching in it.
And let me tell you... watching hits different when you have walked it.
I know the weight of a costume in September heat. I know the ache in your feet by the second block. I know the way the crowd's roar reaches into your chest and carries you the rest of the way.
So this year, from the curb, we cheered and celebrated.
Every krewe that passed, I knew exactly what it cost them to shine like that. And they were pure magic! ✨️ The joy is real. The sweat is real. The freedom is the whole point.
And here is the thing about this weekend. You do not have to be in the parade to belong to it. My Shimmy Shakti krewe was right there on the sidelines in full costume, cheering our hearts out, and the marchers cheered us right back. "You look beautiful," they yelled, because we showed up dressed, because we honored the day. That is part of what there is to love. Everybody who comes ready gets to be seen.
Fifty-four years ago this started as a going-away party for a few friends. Look at it now. One of the biggest celebrations in the world, built out of love, defiance, and glitter.
To everyone who marched... I see you. And this year, I got to cheer for you.
With a second line in my step wherever the rhythm carries me,
Karlita
