A major mode of transportation in the FQ is a bicycle…and those pedaling never disappoint with their beautiful decorative displays of color and fun 🤩

Ever get turned around in the French Quarter? If you have a view of the steeples of the Cathedral…there’s a 95% chance you are on Chartres Street. Despite the enormous size of the structure and its tall steeples…the French Quarter is such a very ‘concentrated’ area. From above, it would look like a Rubic’s Cube of structures and hidden cement courtyards. I’m always amazed at how close you can be to the cathedral and never see it coming!!

Chartres Street, however, is the ONE street you can look down and see, at minimum, the steeples of the Cathedral. It also has SO many seriously unique shops, galleries, and local vibe bars that have that calming out-of-the-way “feel”. And seriously, it’s truly hard to beat that VIEW❣️⭐️

The backyard of St. Louis Cathedral…and a lovely gated garden and the Touchdown Jesus statue that looks especially stunning at night. Pirates Alley borders the right side, and Pete Antoine Alley on the left (convenient shortcuts back to Jackson Square…and great ghostly strolls) It’s a lovely spot on Royal Street, often filled with works from local artists for sale and musicians in the street. 🖼️🎶

Pretty in Pink 🩷
The bright, blooming beauty of the pink Crepe Myrtle against the pink wall made such a striking contrast against the dark clouds as a Spring storm was quickly rumbling its way closer.

The eternally famous Voodoo Queen Marie Laveau. She passed away 133 years ago on June 15, 1891…age 79. Her life & legacy, legend & folklore have strongly endured. Her grave(s) are the most visited in the world!
🥀
Before a tour guide jumps on me about the grave I posted…I’ll explain 😊 In short, IT’S MY FAVORITE!!!!!!
🥀
My first 3 official tours of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 (between 2002-2010), the Guide’s FIRST stop was this tomb. It was the same story. That the exact location of Marie Laveau’s remains were in 1 of 3 tombs in the cemetery. No one knew for sure which one, but it was narrowed down. At that time, THIS amazingly beautiful tomb was the preferred choice. So…of course…it explains the endless offerings and multitude of “###” carvings left behind. (A ritual done to ask the Voodoo Queen for favors) Offerings were so plentiful, they had to clear them for space often. This tomb was (and still is) a spiritual experience just being near it. So much love, so many wishes and prayers bestowed upon it. You can FEEL it!
🥀
The 2nd possible tomb was the family tomb a few rows back. Much more plain and less adorned. The 3rd possibility was way in the back and I barely remember it. There was not much emphasis on it.
🥀
Since those tours, my years of wandering and meeting more tour guides, the story took a turn…Especially after the pink paint desecration of the family tomb in 2013. The Archdiocese and chosen tour guides are more stern about the “family tomb” being her resting place.
🥀
Personally, I don’t really care where her physical remains lie. I just know her energy is ALL OVER that Cemetery and I respect it and her amazing life. AND I JUST LOVE THIS TOMB…whoever is in it❣️❣️❣️

It’s been a rainy, stormy ⛈️ weekend here in NOLA…but the temps were blissfully cooler. The extra bonus, though, is how beautiful the Cathedral looks surrounded by the wet 💦, sparkling ✨ walkways.
