A couple of months ago, I gifted myself with a new Kaleidoscope filter for my cameras. Two mornings ago, I was up well before sunrise and as I sat there in the living room sipping my coffee, I decided to take out my new filter and try to photograph the sunrise and I am absolutely in love with this shot. So much, I thought it would be the perfect photo to commemorate the mark of the shortest day. December 21st, more commonly known as the Winter Solstice.

Today, in our calendars we say goodbye Autumn! and Hello Winter! Although up where I live, we’ve had winter since about Thanksgiving 🤣 so what’s the winter solstice you ask? Well, as you know, our Planet Earth’s polar axes aren’t straight up or down, but rather slightly tilted. With the Earth rotation and translation through its orbit, the Sun exposure in certain corners of our planet change according to the season. During the months of Winter, the tilt causes the path of the Sun to be further South (for those in the North) and to be shorter through our sky, giving way for a longer night, the opposite happens during the Summer. Which causes our Sun to rise just before 5am and to set around 9pm; in contrast to the Winter, for example today (remember this is the shortest day of the year) the sun came up at 7:14am and it’s set to disappear on the horizon at around 3:44pm.

This change of sunrise and sunset is a concept I’m still wrapping my head around, if you remember I am from Panamá, which sits near the Equator. Our days are literally 12-12 throughout the year, never changes. Living in NorthEast, I’ve learned so much about the season changes and how it affects everything and everyone in between. Plants go dormant because of the cold weather and the lack of sun exposure, but it can also lead to one of the most common causes for depression. The lack of vitamin D produced by the natural exposure to the daily sun truly causes problems and issues in the human beings’ mind and body. So if you live in the North and struggle with your emotions and depression, go get some vitamins at your grocery store 😉

I hope you like this image as much as I do. Thank you for your support and talk soon.

After years of chasing, finally... success! I crossed out my #1 item from my bucket list and saw the Aurora Borealis two nights ago in Northern Maine for the first time ever. The feeling inside is undescribable. I'm still excited and jittery and frankly I won't stop talking about, but do I ever? 😅😆😆

My dad and I always connected upon astronomy and all the wonders of the Universe. Seeing the Aurora Borealis was the ultimate goal in mine and one of them in his. Dad, I beat you 😘 but I am happy to keep telling you when to look outside 😉 ILY dad♥️

So what is the Aurora Borealis? It is a natural light display in the sky, mostly seen around the Artic and the Antarctic Regions but on occasions, can be seen further south, in my case, right from my front yard in New Sweden. They're the result of disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind. They're rare, mesmerizing, and totally unpredictable. Although with years of careful observation, the experts on the matter have come up with different ways of tracking the Sun's surface activity to alert us when there are chances to possibly catch the gorgeous display.

Hope you like it. And thank you for your support ♥️
