So I can totally say that I’m not givin’ you all any bull when I say last weekend I learned more about bulls and bull riding than I’ve known my entire life. To be fair, that’s a short yardstick to use.
I spent the weekend with and a couple of their co-bull-owners learning all about , stock contractors (bucking bull breeders/curators), breeding and evaluating bulls for PBR events, and corralling roaming bulls in drive-throughs.
How did this happen, you ask? I hung out with and magic happened. We met in LA circa 2002 and she has lived multiple lives since then. Currently bull syndication owner and business woman, five (ish) feet of fierce determination and charm. (Swipe left to see her with at .nyc (I also learned about Ducati racing, it was a busy weekend).
A few bull notes: No, their te**es aren’t tied up to make them buck. The rope is called a flank strap and is tied around the midsection like a belt. They’re bred for buckability (I made that up, unless it is a word), after they’re done bucking, they retire and sometimes breed (lucky lady bulls), and scores are 50% rider 50% bull performance. Two athletes, not one.
Who knew.
I hope to learn more about this world going forward, because if you can’t be curious about this kind of s**t, why be a photographer? 🤠📸
Ps I will never legitimately earn a cowboy hat but they’re pretty darn cool.
