Yesterday afternoon, Shadow glided beautifully into the nest. He took a moment to check out the nest and headed out to the front porch for some quiet time. He perched in the breeze, preening and seemed to enjoy over an hour of quiet time.

The close ups show his beautiful interlocking feathers in detail, and it looks as though he is molting and growing some new white head feathers.

When he was ready to head out to the roost tree for the night, he stretched out his wing and fanned out his snowy white tail feathers.

Soon after Shadow left the nest, Kaydee landed in the basement below the nest for a short time, before heading over to the roost tree where we found both eagles preening and settling in for the night.

We cannot know what Shadow is thinking or feeling, Over the last week we did observe Shadow getting a bit testy with Kaydee. It is possible that Shadow is just not ready for Kaydee’s flirty eagle advances or maybe not interested in Kaydee at all.

Generally nesting behavior at the Big Bear nest starts gradually in October or November and ramps up in December. With the loss of Jackie, we are not sure what to expect. We will have to be patient, observe and see what the future holds for Shadow.

Shadow and Kaydee’s dawn chorus reads like a behavioral breadcrumb trail: vocalizing together at sunrise, a quick Lookout Tree stop, then off-camera movement that looks more like shared morning pattern than romance. 🦅

The safest read is cautious: territory contact and routine companionship are visible; pair-bond proof is not.

Dolly Parton’s eagle legacy isn’t ending. 🦅

After 35 years of partnership, the bald eagles formerly housed at Dollywood’s Eagle Mountain Sanctuary are moving permanently to the American Eagle Foundation’s 50-acre conservation campus in Kodak, Tennessee. The sanctuary was damaged by a storm, but the birds’ care and AEF’s educational work will continue.

For those who followed Jackie and Shadow, the connection feels especially meaningful. One beloved pair inspired millions to care about eagles, while Dolly helped turn that same love into decades of conservation.

Regarding KD1 and giving this eagle a name. Generally, Friends of Big Bear Valley does not give names to nest visitors unless they have been around long-term…until now. We have chosen to name KD1 Kaydee, whether or not they decide to stay in the area. We cannot know for sure if Kaydee is a female or not, we can only observe and let nature tell us the definitive answer to that question. With that being said, we are leaning towards female.

Tuesday evening, we spotted Shadow and Kaydee in a favored roost tree.

Wednesday morning, they both belted out good mornings to the valley below.

Later in the afternoon we saw Shadow fly into the twin pines perch tree, less than a minute later, Kaydee joined him. On different branches, they both stayed perched for about three hours. When Shadow decided to head out to areas unknown to us, Kaydee followed just two seconds later. Shadow has a shadow!

As the day was coming to an end, the nest camera turned to the roost tree once again, and once again we found Shadow and Kaydee perched on different branches. For reasons unknown to us, Kaydee bounced off the roost tree and headed to the nest, maybe for a quick nest check before roosting for the night? Kaydee then headed back to the roost tree where both eagles chortled an end to the day.

Several agencies in the Big Bear Valley got together to discuss an event to honor our beloved Jackie on October 3rd. Our hearts are broken by the loss of Jackie and though we know this is nature, it will take time for all of us, including all of you, to get through this.
