August in Paris is “a monthlong weekend of lazy doings and simple diversions,” according to National Geographic Traveler magazine. Sisse Brimberg photographed Paris in August 2009 for “The Longest Sunday,” published in the July issue of NatGeo Traveler. The image of Parisian shop owners looking at the photographer with expressions of equal annoyance and condescension is my favorite image, a masterpiece street photograph, a decisive moment with much narrative baggage, direct composition, without gimmick, and haunting expression. It would be a fine image in black & white, but in color the image is brilliant!
