Ferncliff Cemetery - Hartsdale NY

El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X), the Light of American Islam, and his beloved wife Hajjah Dr. Betty Shabazz - رحمهما الله

With this past Wednesday, February 21 marking the 59th anniversary of the martyrdom of Malcolm X and today being the 15th of Shaban so close to the Gregorian date, it was only apt to visit the Patron Saint of New York City. Alhamdulillah for this opportunity coming to fruition.

With the ongoing escalation in genocide in Gaza since October 7th, and the crisis in Sudan, Niger, Congo, Kashmir, East Turkestan, etc. it is very clear where Malcolm would stand if he were physically among us today. What would he do? What would he say in the face of the statements of our elected officials? How would he inspire the Muslim community to stay steadfast in the face of injustice?

The best part about visiting the graves of Awliya is that it reminds you of a victorious ending (Insha Allah) for those who keep their promise to Allah and it also motivates you to live a life for truth and authenticity.

The name of Malcolm X will always be included among the Saviors of Islamic Spirit, alongside Umar Ibn Abdul Aziz, Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, Salahuddin Ayyubi, Shah Waliullah Dehlawi, Sidi Omar Mukhtar, and so many more (May Allah sanctify all their secrets).

Not all heroes and Awliya wear capes. Some were suits and ties too. May Allah enable us to keep visiting His humble servant Malcolm Shabazz, grant him Jannatul Firdaus in the company of Prophets, Saints, Martyrs, and the Righteous, and benefit us through him in this life and the next.

Layla-tun-Nisf min Shaban (Shab-e-Barat) 15th Shaban Mubarak to everyone!
——————————————————————————

Ibn Majah narrated that Abu Musa al-Ash’ari said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,

“Indeed, Allah looks [at His creation] on the middle night of Sha’ban. He forgives all His creation, except a polytheist or a bickerer.”

Union Theological Seminary

The Palestine Festival of Literature in early November showcased some amazing activists and academics specializing in Palestinian history and resistance, including notables such as Mohammed El-Kurd , Noura Erakat , and Professor Rashid Khalidi of Columbia University.

While protesting, walking the streets, and blocking bridges are very important to raise awareness and awaken the city’s conscience, literary and artistic expressions of Palestinian plight are also part of the oxygen that keeps the movement alive and vibrant

JUMUAH MUBARAK - At the maqam (resting place) of El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz and his beloved wife Dr. Betty Shabazz (May God have mercy on both of them).

The autobiography of Malcolm X is foundational in understanding the greatness of this man and how his life is a learning path for each of us. It doesn’t stop there because one should build upon this book to fully understand the teachings and legacy of Malcolm X.

“I Buried Malcolm X” by Shaykh Heshaam Jaaber gives a personal look into the final moments of the great leader before he was taken to his resting place. It also pays homage and tribute to the Jaaber family who have stood like a rock to the Shabazz since a time when it wasn’t popular to do so.

The Sirah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of God be upon him) is very important not just for ourselves but also to know how important the Prophetic following and emulation was to Malcolm X once he accepted the truth of Orthodox Sunni Islam.

“Notions That Must Be Corrected” by Shaykh Muhammad ibn Alawi al-Makki (May God have mercy on him) is important because this is exactly what Malcolm X wanted for his people and for the larger Muslim: to correct their notions. His legacy and the scholars it has produced emphasize knowledge over ignorance, practice over talk, and action over words. Hence, this is an important book to honor the legacy of the Light of American Islam, El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz

LATE POST

Moon on the 9th night of Dhul Qadah from Dawood Mosque/Islamic Mission of America on State Street in downtown Brooklyn. This is the oldest regularly inhabited masjid in NYC and has been serving the community since the 1930s. It’s just mesmerizing to watch the moon in its glory right atop the doors of this blessed place.

Tucked away in East Village on 1st Ave between 13th & 14th Street is this delicious spot called Big Arc Chicken.

Everything on their menu is great, especially their beef stew and whole chicken. Even their dessert doesn’t disappoint.

The portions are generous and the prices are reasonable considering the location and size of the place.

The beautiful thing about New York is not just the masajid or communities that are well-known or established, but also the ones you randomly come across in an area.

This one Jamia Muhammadia Rizwia is walking distance from Sunset Park and also Greenwood Cemetery, located on 40th Street between 9th & 10th Avenue in Brooklyn

It is a Barelwi community as is evident with the colorful and heartwarming expressions of the love of the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه و سلم , the Sahaba, the Ahlul Bayt, and the Awliya that followed in their noble footsteps throughout the ages.

Barelwism (named after a town in UP India called Bareilly) is a revivalist movement within traditional Sunni Islam that sought to preserve the normative Islamic practices of the subcontinent at a time when they were under attack.

Majority of the Muslims of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and India are Barelwi or Barelwi-leaning as it still continues to be the default expression of Sunni Islam in the subcontinent.

Do check this quiet, hidden place if you’re in the area next.
