Each cassowary has a razor-sharp inner claw on each foot that can reach up to 12 cm (5 inches) long. These claws are powerful enough to inflict deep cuts if the bird feels threatened. A forceful kick can be extremely dangerous to predators—or people who get too close.
2. They're Built Like Feathered Dinosaurs
Standing up to 2 meters (6.5 feet) tall and weighing as much as 70 kg (154 pounds), cassowaries are the world's second-heaviest birds after ostriches. Their striking blue skin, black feathers, and helmet-like casque give them an appearance that closely resembles ancient dinosaurs.

Despite their size, cassowaries can sprint at speeds of around 50 km/h (31 mph) through dense rainforest. They can also leap nearly 1.5 meters (5 feet) into the air and are excellent swimmers, crossing rivers with ease.
