Mr Tom says “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, and the next best time is today.”
In 2010 I discovered how food is medicine. In 2020 I discovered the fragility of our modern industrialized food system. We moved to Raleigh and started a garden.
There is nothing more delicious than pulling a fruit off of a tree that you planted, that’s ripe and ready to eat! Your nervous system calms bc you know it has not been sprayed with chemicals, waxed or gas and wasn’t picked green. The flavor is unmatched and melts in your mouth, quite literally filling your heart with joy. Food was meant to bring this kind of calm abundant joy.
We planted it four years ago, and now, after developing roots, it’s fruiting for the first time!!
When you see a fruit in the store, it has traveled all across the United States, even from other countries wasting fossil fuels. There is no need for us to depend on a grocery store to provide us with fruit and vegetables, herbs and greens.
We are wasting our time our energy, taking care of grass when grass was always just a status symbol, saying to the general public that you have enough money to waste land.
We have been conditioned to believe that grass yards are beautiful.
I don’t know about you, but I hear from so many people that are all struggling and the food prices keep rising, keeping up with the mega-rich and not regular educated people who are working jobs.
Now that we have worked 6 years on the garden, a new passion has become sharing my art and garden hopefully inspiring others to do the same. If 2 out of 5 people did this there would be enough food for everybody.
When you plant a fruit tree, it takes up to four years before it bears fruit. Every year, you prune it back letting it develop a good root system. For trees are not hard to take care of. We have one pear tree one apricot tree, two peach trees, one serviceberry tree, one fig tree one Asian pear tree and we’re going to be adding at least 4 more trees that bare fruit. We grow cabbage, broccoli, kale, tomatoes, Swiss chard, peppers, and so much more.
