Update2 - 09.06am - 10.30am - Shadow tried so hard to find a taker for his late Breakfish. He first arrived with it at the nest at 09.06am and waited to see if Luna and/or Sandy would arrive to claim. But they didn't come, so at 09.10am he picked it up and flew off with it to a nearby snag tree. But no takers there. So he returned with it to the nest and waited plus moved a few sticks around. But he gave up waiting at 09.28am and flew off with the Breakfish again which by this time was much smaller thanks to him nibbling it. Luna and Sandy must have 'bigger fish to fry' elsewhere perhaps with Jackie. Luna and Sandy returned to the nest around 10.30am - one to the Attic whilst the other to the lower Back Porch.

Update1
07.42am - 08.30am - Shadow arrived with Breakfish nearly a minute before Sandy made a dramatic heavy landing to claim it as hers. Luna didn't arrive for another 5 minutes by which time there was little left of the Breakfish for him. Both hung around together at the nest until just after 8am when Luna left but Sandy stayed until 08.24am.

05.15am - 06.25am - Sandy and Luna woke up together at their nest to another amazing Big Bear sunrise with Jackie/Shadow calling to them across the treetops from one of their favourite Lookout Trees down by the Lake. Then at 06.05am, first Luna then closely followed by Sandy, flew from the nest to tree-hop around their Big Bear neighbourhood waiting for their Breakfish from Jackie and Shadow

High atop an ancient pine, a majestic bald eagle stands watch over its nest, sheltering a pair of fluffy, inquisitive eaglets. This 10-second scene captures the powerful contrast between the eagle's sharp, vigilant gaze and the gentle, nurturing care provided to its young. As the wind softly rustles through the surrounding branches, we get a rare, intimate look at the quiet strength of an eagle family in their natural habitat.

Luna, Sandy & empty nest syndrome...🪹
What an emotional few days for us aunties & uncles! I’m sure most of us are feeling the effect of ‘empty nest syndrome’ but we can also share so much joy and pride in seeing how Jackie & Shadow’s constant dedication & care paid off when their eaglets both fledged.
As we observed Luna and Sandy’s special moment played out very differently but in the coming days and weeks their wonderful parents will be there for them. Jackie & Shadow’s morning chortles are more comforting than ever 🎼 – their calming presence is the perfect way to start the day for us and the two juveniles. 🪶🪶

Luna and Sandy will not be the master of the skies from day one, it will take time as they are still developing flight muscles and they need to learn to judge distance and the elements. But each day they will grow stronger and wiser.

A note about Sandy ❤️: she has been spending time on rocks but we have also seen her flying too. Being female, Sandy needs a bit of time to catch up with Luna as she is bigger and heavier than him, with more muscle power to coordinate & master. Jackie and Shadow will be patient with Sandy and so will we. 🫶

We can take relief in knowing that even if we don’t observe them on camera, Jackie and Shadow will know exactly where Luna and Sandy are. The nest is still the juvenile’s home for now and we look forward to both of them hopefully visiting again soon - the lure of a fish simply cannot be ignored 🐟🐟!

Accidental Fledge

This morning at 11:24 Cam time, both Sandy and Luna were on the front porch. Luna attempted to jump over Sandy to get back to the nest, when Sandy lost her footing and fell to some branches below. A few minutes later she freed herself from those branches and apparently landed somewhere below the nest as we could hear her squees. Jackie showed up within minutes and landed below the nest keeping an eye on Sandy.

At 11:30, our security camera captured Sandy flying from the nest tree area to another area out of view, making it difficult to find where she landed, video attached. Sandy looked good in her flight, and she is likely relaxing from her unexpected adventure. Jackie and Shadow will now follow her wherever she goes and make sure she is fed and taken care of. Currently our camera operators are continuing to search for her.
Once we have more information, an update will be posted

I saw a picture of Sandy in a different tree, very thankful for that. I know her parents will make sure she is well cared for. Has the nest cam been shut off? I haven’t seen how Luna is doing without his sister, I am worried for him also.

Impressive Practice

Sandy and Luna have been giving it their all with wingersizing and branching.

Early this morning Luna ventured out to the front porch and Sandy followed. Luna found himself stuck out on a limb, how would he get back to the nest with Sandy blocking the way? Luna took a small leap of faith with a little help from his wings, and it seemed he was happy to be back on solid ground in the nest!

Let the winger practice begin! Sandy out front, Luna out back shaking it up in the nest and looking quite impressive from both views. Sandy continued exercising on the front porch, getting a little bit of lift from her powerful wings. Neither eaglet has pulled off a full hover yet, but we can expect to see that any day now.

Both Sandy and Luna seem to enjoy their new extensions of the nest tree, along with the views they have from the outer branches. Their newly found confidence is really showing. Ending their day side by side on the front porch with plenty of sibling beaky kisses….!!
