The court ruled in favor of the hotel.
Gerald can stay through September 30th.
8 weeks out. New work available now.
Hereโs where we are:
Room 1014. The Hotel Chelsea. Gerald moved in on October 1st, 1994. On October 1st it will be 32 years. The stay on his eviction expires September 30th, one day before.
On July 20th the court ruled against him and granted the hotel a judgment of possession. He is 67 years old. He pays his rent. He is still here, still painting, still working in the same room.
This month the New York Post put the story in front of the whole city. The hotel acquired 21 of his paintings.
Gerald has more work hanging in the hallways than any other artist in the building. The same ownership wants him out. The contradiction is the point.
This is what cultural displacement looks like in New York City.
Two things you can do:
Come to the sale on Saturday, August 8th, 12 to 4pm, in Room 1014. New work is available, and you can take home a piece of Room 1014 from the Hotel Chelsea.
