In this upcoming episode of Wider Lens, we sit down with David Wyble a color scientist, longtime researcher at the Munsell Color Science Laboratory, and co-founder of Gray Sky Imaging, to take a closer look at what it really means to get color right, and why accurate color is fundamental to cultural heritage digitization.
Color seems straightforward until you try to measure it. What does an RGB value from a camera actually tell us? How do you characterize a camera, scanner, printer, or display to ensure that one instrument’s “red” matches another’s? And perhaps most importantly, how do these measurements connect to the way the human eye actually perceives color?
In this conversation, we explore the science, challenges, and standards behind color accuracy, and why getting color right is about far more than simply making an image look good.

A new episode of Wider Lens — Digital Transitions' podcast on cultural heritage digitization — is live!

This time we're joined by Martina Hoffmann, Head of Digitization Services at the Swiss National Library and an internationally active consultant on digitization and QA workflows. Her path into the field wasn't the usual one — she started in project administration, not photography — and 15 years later she's running digitization for a national library.

We get into why digitization standards matter, how ISO 19264-1 compares to guidelines like FADGI and Metamorfoze, what real quality assurance looks like day to day, the most common workflow mistakes labs make, training new staff without a formal education path, and Martina's candid take on where AI genuinely helps in cultural heritage work — and where it doesn't.

America’s history is, in many ways, a history of immigration.

The people who came here from different countries, cultures, and backgrounds helped shape the communities, institutions, industries, and ideas that define the nation today. Their stories are not separate from American history—they ARE American history.

As cultural heritage professionals, archivists, librarians, and preservation specialists, we play an important role in ensuring these stories remain accessible for future generations.

What immigrant stories are represented in your collections, archives, or community history projects?
