Kyle Froman has made the extraordinary transformation from dancer for America’s premier ballet company to one of the country’s best-known dance photographers. He was a member of the New York City Ballet for thirteen years. After coming to New York to study at the Scho

ol of American Ballet, the NYCB’s official training ground, he was awarded the first Rudolph Nureyev Scholarship in 1994 to study at the school year-round. Six months later, he was chosen as an apprentice for the New York City Ballet, and a year later signed his contract as a corps dancer for the company. Froman performed nightly in over 80 different ballets by George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Peter Martins, Susan Stroman, and Elliot Feld. He toured extensively with the company throughout Russia, Denmark, Japan, Scotland, Greece, Italy, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia. In the course of his years with the company, Froman began to photograph the inner workings of NYCB, from the daily rituals of morning class to the agonies of injured dancers being treated in the company’s physical therapy room. His work was recognized by John Wiley and Sons, which in 2007 published a book of his work. IN THE WINGS: Behind the Scenes at the New York City Ballet, established him as a major photographer in the ballet world. Froman’s photography has been frequently published in New York Magazine, The New York Times, Time Out/ New York, and Playbill. He conceived and shot a photo book for the NYCB entitled “...the true foundation,” that Vanity Fair published in its entirety on its website. He’s a regular contributor to Dance Magazine, Pointe Magazine, and Dance Teacher Magazine. In 2010, Froman was named company photographer for the Miami City Ballet, where he shot for two years. He has been flown twice to Copenhagen, Denmark to photograph and produce 50-page programs for the Royal Danish Ballet. He's photographed for the Alvin Ailey Extension Program and School, and three consecutive years for the dance company Morphoses, producing posters that lined the corridors of the New York City subway system. He's photographed for the PBS series Dance in America, the New York Musical Theater Festival, the Fire Island Dance Festival and the Vail International Dance Festival. Froman was the official in-house photographer three seasons in a row for designer Joseph Altuzarra's Fashion Week show. Froman is also an established Broadway photographer. He's photographed the marketing campaigns for Broadway's The Phantom of the Opera, Billy Elliot: The Musical, Memphis, the new 25th Anniversary production of Les Miserables, and Diner: The Musical. In 2013, he was named the official production photographer for Broadway-bound Flashdance: The Musical.

I had a wonderful time speaking with ballerina turned writer for her article in about the book I designed and photo edited for , IN BALANCHINE’S STEPS. We talked about translating the GBF’s video coaching archives into a photography book, the importance of preserving intention in choreography, and the power of a good photograph. Gavin is a very talented writer, and her article (linked in bio) is a joy to read. Check it out! Here are and .teusch dancing the pas de deux from Balanchine’s Apollo in 2023. Photo by Costas.

Audition photos can be beautiful! As a former dancer in the , I treat them as an art form.

One thing I look forward to over the fall months is spending time in the studio with ballet students. Since auditions for summer ballet programs start soon after the holidays, there’s always a mad rush for photos that capture the perfect arabesque, the perfect headshot, the perfect releve in croise fourth. I’ve helped countless students attain their goals, and provided parents with treasured memories. Email [email protected], or DM for rates and availability. Photos shot at , and .

If you’re a fan of and Balanchine, or you’re just looking for a fantastic dance photography book, buy a copy of IN BALANCHINE’S STEPS: How the George Balanchine Foundation Preserves His Genius, available on Amazon. The book describes the ‘s Video Archives, created by .reynolds.56232 in 1994. These coaching sessions were also beautifully photographed by Brian Rushton and Costas, and included ballet icons like Violette Verdy, Patricia Wilde, Karin von Aroldingen, and many, many others. It was an absolute honor to curate, photo edit and design this book- I’ve been a lover of all things Balanchine most of my life.

Here’s another spread from The Later Years section of the book, with Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux and Karin von Aroldingen coaching NYCB’s Rebecca Krohn and Amar Ramasar in STRAVINSKY VIOLIN CONCERTO in 2016. These photos are by Costas.

There are wonderful comments throughout the book, by dancers and dance writers, all pulled together by text editor, Mindy Aloff. I’ll only be posting a few more spreads, so go buy a copy of the book for yourself, and lose yourself in the beauty of Balanchine.
