I took this photo of Gloria Steinem in her bedroom. She was preparing for an event with accomplished women, who were filing into her living room.
Even the highest level leaders were giddy with excitement to meet THE Gloria Steinem. She deflected gushing praise, and focused on each individual as they approached her.
I had my own private moment to tell Gloria that I idolized her as a young girl. I saw her as a feminist I who was proudly feminine AND strong, who stood fearlessly with those who were different. She was beautiful, cool, brilliant... and I wanted to be just like her.
She responded that I was even better... because I was ME! I made a self deprecating joke, but she doubled down. She explained that we each have our own life experiences, strengths, and points of view, and we all benefit when we use our strengths and support one another.
I then asked for words of wisdom on how to stay positive when things feel dire. Her answer was to connect with like minded individuals to share ideas, and to also keep the dialog open with those you disagree with.
I'm holding on to her words!!! Thank you Gloria Steinem, you've had a huge impact on my life. I still want to be like you when I grow up.
