Nature doesn’t send invitations. Sometimes it just shows up in your backyard.

Back in July 2024, while making lunch, a massive shadow swept across my backyard. I looked out the window and spotted a beautiful falcon circling overhead before landing on my fence just minutes later. I grabbed my camera and headed outside, not knowing I was about to witness one of the rawest moments I’ve ever photographed.

The falcon had caught one of the bunnies that usually spend their days in my yard eating grass and dandelions. As I moved closer, the falcon lifted off with the bunny and landed on my roof. The stare-downs were intense — one of those moments where you truly feel the power and presence of wildlife up close.

I don’t normally photograph animals, but this experience was on another level and reminded me how unpredictable and breathtaking nature can be.

24 years ago today, I was 19 years old, a student at Kingsborough Community College. I’ll never forget sitting with my counselor as she stared at the TV behind me, her jaw dropped in shock. When I turned around, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

Walking out of school, the smell of smoke filled the air and ash floated above us. My friends and I drove to Dumbo and watched the horrific scene unfold before our eyes.

That day changed the world forever—and it’s a memory that will never leave me. Today, I honor and remember the lives lost, the heroes who ran toward danger, and the resilience of New York City.
