With all the attention the new movie Toney is receiving recently I thought some would be interested is seeing this old post again (or for the first time):
“…A very sad to this very fun assignment for People Magazine with the great chefs Eric Ripert , Sara Moulton , and the now gone anthonybourdain. I was still kinda new at the editorial portrait game at the time and walking into the colossal and famous Le Bernardin kitchen in midtown Manhattan was a bit intimidating. I knew I wanted to try something fun but had no idea how I and my ideas would be received. I thought I’d get little time with these very famous and extremely busy people. If it were not for Anthony’s sense of humor, playfulness, and also kindness to me I’m not sure the others would have played along. Anthony took the lead. As it was they all really enjoyed each other that morning and made me feel like I was for an hour or two. As it turned out People Magazine didn’t like my pictures cause they had ci******es in them. But I didn’t care - I knew the picture worked. I’ll always remember that shoot so fondly. With the news today that Louise Lasser is gone I instantly remembered meeting her very briefly in Central Park in early April 1998. I was on an assignment for Time Magazine (actually a side project of theirs called Time Digital or sometimes OnMagazine - I was never clear which it was). It was "man on the street" type portraits for some back of the book thing. Anyway, I saw this woman admiring a forsythia bush and I approached and asked if she would be in one of my pictures for the magazine. I realized right away who she was when she turned to me and I just tried to keep it together. Be cool. But i was kind of thrilled to be speaking with her. I stayed casual. I explained I'd need a model release signed and that seemed to make her hesitate. It's a long time ago but i distinctly remember her wrestling with the idea and telling me something about it being important to let go. I think she referenced her therapist in her deliberations. So she agreed after a few moments - and that's my story about Ms Lasser. She was so kind that afternoon, and she was cute and funny with no guile or pretense. She was charming. I haven't looked at these pictures in decades. I saw the Borlams's store sign in the background of a random online photo recently and I remembered my short visit there - years ago. It must've been about 1995 give or take. I was a photographer just cutting my teeth shooting for magazine, and I was given the assignment to take pictures at Borlam's. After spending an hour or more there taking pictures of the store and some family members (there were 3 generations there that day) the grandmother, I seem to remember, asked me if she could give me a tip. Being new at this and a little nervous and insecure I thought she was gonna give me some advice cause I had done something inappropriate! She had some gravitas you see. So, at her behest I followed her through the winding store where she took out some cash and handed it to me. I was completely taken unaware. No one had ever given me a tip for taking pictures on an editorial assignment before - or since (b. mitzvahs are a different story nowadays). I'm pretty darn sure I sent some of those pictures of the grandkids to the store ...man, I hope I did! I'll Always have a soft spot for Borlam's.

This 1st photo of The Flatiron building, on what looks like the day after a blizzard, was shot in 1904 according to the where I found it. The 2nd photo I took back in 1996 during a blizzard. In my picture all the cars are either covered in snow or just didn't come into the city because of the storm - there are none you can see on the street which made me feel like a that late morning. I think both photos are remarkably similar - but I hadn't seen the 1904 version until this week. It was just an accident - or maybe this building in the snow "should" just be shot from this angel. As if the scene demands it. I wonder how many other shots are out there like ours? To further enhance the experience I used an old handheld 4x5 film camera to get the shot. Although I believe the speed graphic was more of a 40's and 50's camera. But you get the idea. I imagine the 1904 camera person had their view camera on a tripod with a black cloth over their head.
