It may have been their first hello in the cool air, but these two knew each other long before this moment. It’s incredible to witness freshly born babes connect skin-to-skin with their parents.

Last summer I decided to take some time off from new birth clients because life got hard. Full time solo parenting and having to find childcare in a pandemic at a moments notice worn me down. But I knew I wouldn’t stay away for long and this photo represents one of the reasons why I longed to get back - women are truly resilient! I want to tell the stories of our power each and every day.

This mama worked so hard thru intense back labor for hours at home. After we arrived at the hospital the stress of the moment felt overwhelming for her partner so I tagged in, applying hip counter pressure to relieve some of the discomfort. After a few hours of squeezes and reassurance from her amazing midwife, she was ready to push. She fiercely brought her baby down and into this world. And when the moment came to cut the cord, she was the one to do it.

How could I possibly stay away for long? Witnessing these moments is everything.

I had the incredible privilege of collaborating with the talent group of videographers with Birth Becomes You to honor mothers today with this special edit.

Birth work, just like parenting, has been one of the biggest honors and struggles of my life. Staying on call for families as a single mama can be stressful, though being there in the moment to capture the richness of this universal human experience is EVERYTHING.

It's my hope that one day mothers will be truly valued for the strength they show in pregnancy, birth, and forever postpartum.

Happy Mother's Day to my mom, to your mom, and to all those that made us mothers today.

Fully vaccinated and ready to go back on call for a couple clients later this month. I feel so much more comfortable knowing that I’m safer in both hospital and birth center settings, which means I can offer my clients a more centered expression of care. The 2nd shot was a pretty intense experience for a couple days but I would do it 1000 times over to help myself, my family, and my community stay safer. Here to answer any questions you have about the shots.

This is postpartum. Last week I tried out a new style of photography in the studio and invited mamas to come in and show off their true postpartum selves: bumps, scars, stretch marks and all. This mama said she was happy to wear her old jeans and make the point that we *shouldn’t* feel forced to fit back into what once was. This is her body NOW, in all its life-affirming glory. It was such a beautiful experience and I CANNOT WAIT to get back to shoot more beautiful, vulnerable moments with you all. Re:Postpartum sessions linked in comment below.

Over a week ago I woke up in tears because I knew in my gut that this is where were heading in NYC. One of the largest hospital systems in NYC has started to limit ALL support to birthing persons, including spouses, family, doulas, and more.

I don't think they're wrong, per se, but it's a drastic change in someone's birth plan that undoubtedly causes anxieties and potential trauma that will linger for a long time.

Before this all started, I was getting ready to launch a crowdfunding campaign for a collective I started to better tell women's stories. I'm still planning to launch, though I have serious concerns about the success of my campaign.

In this crisis, I haven't been able to do the work I love but I KNOW deep down it's important. It's given me new resolve to tell these stories, and especially the ones that come out of these specific moments in our time.

New families will be forever impacted by our new reality. I hope you'll support me in shining a light on what's happening. More to come...

My heart is aching for those who have or are due to give birth during this pandemic.

Doulas (and other care providers) are rapidly adjusting to this new normal with virtual ways to support these moments. Postpartum doulas are evermore important in these times, too.

A global pandemic adds several more layers of logistical and emotional overwhelm to the already overwhelming time of new parenthood.
