Egg: A butterfly begins its life as a tiny egg laid on a plant by an adult butterfly. This egg holds the promise of what’s to come.
Larva (Caterpillar): From the egg emerges a caterpillar—a voracious eater. It devours leaves, growing and molting (shedding its skin) repeatedly. Each molt brings it closer to full maturity.
Pupa (Chrysalis): When the caterpillar is ready, it attaches itself to a plant and sheds its skin one last time. Underneath, it reveals a chrysalis—a protective casing. Inside, the caterpillar’s tissues rearrange, forming a head, body, six legs, and four wings.
Transformation: Within the chrysalis, the caterpillar undergoes a remarkable transformation. Its genes and environmental cues signal the right time. Slowly, the tissues reorganize, shaping the butterfly-to-be.
