“In a State of IF” exhibition

In a State of IF is a new exhibition at the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design MIAD that explores art’s role in storytelling, healing, community building and advocacy around infertility and access to reproductive care. Participating artists challenge dominant cultural, medical and legal narratives by reframing fertility, personhood, kinship and parenthood through complex lived experience rather than overly authoritative institutional definitions. Together, these works convey not only the embodied grief and uncertainty (state of IF/infertility) that infertility patients experience but also the resilience, creativity and community that emerge in response to it.

I’m really honored to be part of this exhibition and to have my work included in a larger conversation about infertility, reproductive loss, and reproductive healthcare.

“What were you up to last weekend / over the summer / the last couple of years?” The answer is always the same: I’m a working mother. I’m a mother with no support network around, and very little childcare options — until recently.

By choosing not to have my child raised by strangers in a group setting, I’m punished for it by the current system. In current Western society, we still lack income- and career-support measures for mothers on maternity leave and mothers of young children who aren’t in full-time daycare.

Raising children is the hardest job in the world. We’ve all heard it. And we see how significantly birth rates have declined over the last couple of decades. People, and especially women, understand that it’s next to impossible to combine the hardest job in the world with their paid work. Instead of being supported, women currently get paid significantly less than their typical monthly income — and after some weeks or months, depending on the country, they stop getting paid at all.
Many mothers have to choose between their income and what’s best for their child. I work for myself, so I didn’t lose my job after giving birth. But I’ve lost so many career opportunities because I chose to prioritise my child. My daughter has started full-time daycare this month, and I finally have time to test out ideas, to get creative again.

Happy to announce that starting today and until the 29/09, my work “Freya and Seren” will be exhibited at the Royal Albert Hall, among the works of 27 international artists.

The Royal Photographic Society (RPS) was founded in 1853 to make the art and science of photography more widely available, with the RPS collection and exhibitions being one of the most significant ways of bringing photography to everyone.
This exhibition spans a multitude of subjects and themes to represent what the RPS stands for, highlighting historical and contemporary photographic practices to new audiences.

It’s really an honour to have my Self-Reflection series featured alongside so many talented and renowned contemporary female artists from around the globe.
This series includes work from 7 years ago and until now, it’s my longest project to date. It traces my life, my grown and transformation, and it captures my response to both personal and global events.

So happy and proud to announce that my work is going to be again at Rencontres D’Arles this year!
What’s especially exciting is that this year it’s my DREAM CHILDREN project, which, as many of you know, means so much to me, and I’ve been working a lot to get more visibility for the stories of fertility and reproduction.
