What if the season you’re trying so hard to hold onto…is actually making room for something better? 🍂

Labor Day has always felt bittersweet to me.

Summer isn’t technically gone. There’s still corn at the farm stands, tomatoes on the counter and basil growing outside. But then evening comes, you reach for a sweater…and you know.

Something is changing.

I’ve been thinking about how much that feels like life.

Sometimes we’re ready for a new season. Sometimes we’re absolutely not. Sometimes life turns the page before we’ve finished reading the last one.

My new INTO FOCUS episode of The Artful Gourmet Podcast is a more personal conversation about endings, beginnings, uncertainty, changing priorities—and learning that moving forward doesn’t mean what came before mattered any less.

Some recipes are more than dinner. They’re souvenirs you can cook. 🌊

One Labor Day weekend back in 2011, I stepped off the ferry onto Martha’s Vineyard and fell completely in love.

The harbor. The sailboats. The weathered cottages. The hydrangeas. That unmistakable New England salt air.

And then there was the Quahog Chowder at The Black Dog Tavern in Vineyard Haven.

I recently went back into The Artful Gourmet archives and rediscovered my original story and recipe — and decided it deserved another visit.

My new Substack essay takes you back to Martha’s Vineyard with the history behind The Black Dog, a little lesson in what makes a quahog different from other clams, and the creamy chowder recipe that started this whole love affair.

I’ve also added homemade Garlic-Herb Butter Croutons, a crisp summer side salad, ideas for customizing your chowder with lobster, scallops, fish or extra summer vegetables, plus w**e and local b**r pairings to turn it into a proper New England supper.

All that’s missing is the harbor view. 😉
