Lifelong New Yorker Michael Brafman has been slinging these incredible creative sandwiches from his Sandwich Board window on Eldridge Street for about a year now BUT it was only a couple weeks of ago that my guy opened an actual dining room where you could sit with a buddy (or, in my case, a daughter!) and wolf such delights as Cantonese duck on a pineapple bun, and a chicken cutlet with pickles and chili crisp one, and a spam and eggs and hash browns one, and, of course, the obvious go-to, a towering muffaletta. Much more comfy than standing on the sidewalk! And this block is super chill and communal-vibing?? Big win all around for everyone. Full $20 Dinner report now up at Hell Gate link in bio

I ate so much good food for Brooklyn Magazine this year, in so many fun and welcoming rooms, and with such lovely companions, and I met so many great people along the way, that honestly I’m a little overwhelmed by how much gratitude I feel right now for my life and my work and my friends and my city. So check out my list of the twelve best dishes I ate in 2025 for BK Mag, now up at the site, link in bio, and thanks as always to my current editor Micheal and my former editor Brian for the kind words and constant support.

The superstars behind Cafe Mado, Place de Fetes and Laurel Bakery (aka Redwood Hospitality) are about to open something very good and new conceptually really cool, a cocktail bar called Golden Ratio, which features a wild array of drinks that each have a booze and a no-booze option (that yellow one Molly’s clutching has a *parsnip* foundation, for example, which you can get with either gin and sugar or, our pick, lemon and pine) and some truly outstanding small plates, like anchovy and bonito butter toast, and leeks with chili arbol, and the best deep fried slab of fish I’ve ever had in my life. Seriously: the hake is total magic. Good mousse too. Located at 216 Greene Avenue on the corner of Grand, two doors down from Place de Fetes, opening maybe tomorrow? Not sure tbh, but whenever it does open you should grab the hottest date you can find and go.

I’ve had feteer (basically stuffed Egyptian pizza) twice in the past year on Steinway Street, at two totally different but nearby spots, and the same dude made it both times! He’s like a feteer-making merc! Anyway last week was at Cairo Feteer, and it was phenomenal, as was the koshary (pasta, rice, lentils, crisp fried onions, some kind of mysteriously incredibly delicious sauce), and the kebda (legit spicy beef liver). Bonus: my favorite dining room in Queens! It’s the perfect bring-a-crew restaurant, full $20 Dinner report now up at Hell Gate link in bio

Lobster pizza—yes, LOBSTER PIZZA—is now available for all of us to eat, in Park Slope of all places, at Ben Wexler-Waite’s terrific new Il Leone, and it’s really good and very fun to eat and kind of a can’t miss date idea?? But Wexler-Waite’s other pizzas here might be even better? That white Funghi pie was funky and phenomenal and featured the proper amount of cracked black pepper (aka a s**t ton), and the Margherita del Leone starred maybe the best tomato sauce I’ve ever had. From the enormously likeable OG Pierogi Boys themselves (that’d be Krzysztof “Chris” Poluchowicz and Andrzej “Andrew” Kinczyk), comes this super cute namesake cafe and bar in Ridgewood, with a tight menu of Polish comfort food classics, lots of alcohol, and, amazingly, a whole ass grocery store in the back. Incredible things going on in Ridgewood these days. The pierogis are great, obviously, but that bowl of white borscht is what I’ll really be craving all winter. Little Grand is throwing a fun lparty every night on the eastern edge of Williamsburg and, in addition to just being a good-looking room with lots of booze (owners Claudio Coronas and Michael Smart are longtime area residents and restauranteurs, and the latter has designed and built places for the likes of Keith McNally and Jodi Williams, which totally tracks), all of food from chef Salem Williams has real presence, even the basic stuff like that bleu cheeseburger, and the sausage-stuffed deep fried olives, and the roasted delicata squash with pesto. At 8:00 on most nights a DJ gets behind the decks, but it was plenty hopping by the time we left at like 7:00. Full report now up at Brooklyn Magazine link in bio

Terrific Indian-vibing sandwiches, both vegetarian and non-, at the super-cute (and, right now, perhaps overly-popular) Fonty’s Deli on Christopher Street. The chicken tikka naanini is getting a lot of deserved attention—it’s impressively fiery and messy as hell—but the tuna melt and the spiced-potato-based “Bombay” sandwich were equally good and satisfying. Co-owner Varsha Harlalka was a delight as well. And before you scoff at the shoppy-shop “Dukaan” part of the operation, the crew is excited to have space to celebrate Indian brands and nostalgic favorites, so maybe just chill? One of my favorite meals of year was this feast at Good Days in the old Fatty ‘Cue/Loosie Rouge space, just banger after banger coming from chef Stephany Burgos’s kitchen, who apparently is some sort of genius at throwing in an unexpected ingredient and pushing familiar favorites into fresh new territory. That burnt onion dijonnaise dip with the snappy ass shrimps, for example, was a total delight, even better, shockingly, than the extremely good horseradish-heavy cocktail sauce. And it’s all like that! The superb steak frites au poivre with a touch of mojo, the chicken liver with guava, the go-for-broke bucatini with bottarga, butter, and breadcrumbs, the flan-ish salted caramel budino… all so great. And Burgos and her co-owner/wife Amanda Norton did a fantastic job with space, very cute and cozy with lots of homey touches. A big winner in South W***y. You know how they preview the commercials before the Super Bowl? This is like that, except it’s me hyping Hell Gate’s $20 Dinner, and it’s going to run for real tomorrow on Hell Gate’s sure-to-be-a-blast Election Night Livestream starring the whole dang team of crack journalists and, like, entertaining take-havers. If you watched Hell Gate’s Primary Night livestream you already know how good this is going to be. Promo vid shot and creative directed by the tireless Scott Heins (), who also helped me eat those excellent Formosa dumplings. Livestream link in bio!! No better people to hang with on election night than Max, Katie, Chris, Jessy, Adlan, Nick, Esther, Nadia, Rick and probably surprise guests or whatever. Lfgoooooooooo

Another hall-of-famer hits Hell Gate’s $20 Dinner map this week after my recent feast at Nepali Bhanchha Ghar in Jackson Heights. Ten years in, the momo jhol will still buckle your knees (pictured are the paneer ones ), but everything is great here, from the circular fried dough sel roti to the hearty, noodley thupka to the fun samay baji platter, anchored here with chunks of goat stomach. Incredible, exuberantly festooned room too. Complete $20 Dinner report now up at Hell “Election Night Livestream” Gate link in bio

Lawyer-turned-baker-turned-pizzaiolo Chris Milazzo and his popular popup Bad Cholesterol just opened a permanent place in Red Hook called Third Time’s The Charm, with punchy Neapolitan-sized pies (thin crisp crust; bulbous outer rim; no wet center) like the spicy marg with sausage and the creamy mushroom with rosemary. Excellent, if meagerly allotted, fried onion petals too. It’s in the former Grindhaus space, and still has that nice covered back patio. Full report now up at Brooklyn Magazine link in bio
