“In 1953, Salvador Dalì entered a costume design contest and asked
Philippe Halsman to photograph his creation. The dress was so
voluminous it could not be photographed in the studio. Halsman tried to
shoot in the street, but even the street was too narrow. Finally, Halsman
decided to take the entire ensemble, including assistants and a LIFE
magazine researcher, to the rooftop of the Roxy Theatre.
“The model Toni Hollingsworth wears the dress Dalì designed, and
Halsman’s younger daughter Jane, dressed in black, holds up the
spectacular headpiece.
“The Roxy Theatre, a lavish and innovative movie palace, opened in 1927
and was demolished in 1960.”

Halsman and Dali became friends in the early 1940s in NYC, and created iconic images together for the next 37 years. Their working process has been documented through many books and exhibitions. This portrait is from 1954.

In 1953 Dali designed a dress for a Surrealist fashion event. Halsman took one of his favorite models and his youngest daughter Jane onto the roof of a midtown building to capture a dramatic photo. 🦋
