I see the final images before I take a photo. I knew my main photo would be of model sitting and resting on the table. I knew to get what I wanted I would have to add some lighting of my own. I knew that I had enough ambient light to not have to worry about background. So I had to light the model without affecting the background. My issue was that I had a 28 inch collapsible beauty and with it open I couldn't get the look I wanted. I ended up closing down the beauty dish so I could focus the light on the model. Due to location and things going on around me I only could place my light on Camera Right so the pose would also have to favor that direction of light.
Basically I began with the idea and I worked through making it happen. Sometimes it works out fine and others times I fail miserably. Even when I do fail I pick up something I can use next time. I ended up shooting with a high ISO and a pretty slow shutter speed and most likely shooting at F/4
This is playing with the modeling light as using flash at this time would require me to think through the shot in more details. It is something I could have done had I not been shooting in a heavy traffic area and could take my time. Often times I'm moving very fast through my ideas of what I want to shoot and how especially on location. So my focus is capture something I can be happy with and move on. Being able to move around the way I do keeps me in trouble shooting mode.
