Phil Lesh died yesterday at the ripe old age of 84. He was the long-time bass player for one of America's most influential rock groups. You didn't have to be a Dead Head to appreciate their contribution. My tastes ran more to Genesis, PInk Floyd and The Who, but I didn't turn down the opportunity to photograph them once in 1977. The image I captured of Jerry Garcia is still one of my best known and most popular photographs.
We have seen the passing of a multitude of artists who shaped the musical landscape of the last half-century. Many of us have been around long enough to witness and participate in this evolution personally. So even though the only Grateful Dead records I own are 'American Beauty' and two additional albums that my photographs illustrate, I felt a connection based on respect. You don't get to stick around and remain in the public consciousness from the 1960s without doing something right. So Phil Lesh's passing and the times he contributed give me pause, makes me nostalgic and a little sad. RIP Phil.

I couldn’t resist a visit to Abbey Road while in London. I wasn’t surprised to see it busier than a Taylor Swift merch table and the locals who are unhappy about the volumes of Beatles fans on a pilgrimage to the road crossing (sorry), are still very polite to the non-stop parade. Coincidentally today was John Lennon’s birthday and the date in 1985 when Strawberry Fields was dedicated to his memory.
It was worth the walk.

Sad news tonight that Kris Kristofferson has died at 88 years of age.
He was a massive talent who always present and welcome.
He quietly retired from performing only a few years ago.
I first photographed him in Toronto in January 1980, long into his incredible career. He is pictured here at Maple Leaf Gardens.
The last time was at a concert special in 1985, celebrating Glen Campbell's amazing trajectory in music. The highlight of the evening was a portrait with Glen, Kris, Mel Tillis, and Anne Murray. Throughout the evening, I heard stories and jokes that can never be repeated. He was an important song writer, scholar, actor, and low key guy. RIP Kris.

Today is Bruce Springsteen's 75th birthday. Time flies, doesn't it, especially
when you are a musician performing 3 hour nightly concerts.
I first photographed Bruce and the E Street Band 46 years ago. Somehow, it seems like yesterday.
All the best Bruce!

Stevie Ray Vaughan died in a helicopter crash following a concert with Eric Clapton at the Alpine Valley Music Theater on August 27, 1990.
I photographed him many times in the five years before his death. The last shows were with Jeff Beck. Vaughan's artistry and talent were unrivaled. Thankfully, his influence hasn't waned in 34 years. RIP, Stevie.

The most valuable Grateful Dead poster
from the 'Potpourri' October 1, 1967 concert, the first The Greek Theater, University of California in Berkley, sold tonight for a record $26,400 (including buyer's premium). It is one of 4 to exist and the only known poster that is in perfect condition, a rarity for concert posters that are more than half a century old
Remarkably, the artwork of rock music continues to hold and exceed its value years later. The Grateful Dead vintage artwork commands the highest prices, followed by Hendrix, The Who, The Doors, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Pink Floyd.

Coincidentally the Grateful Dead shared the stage with The Allman Brothers and The Band 51 years ago today at Watkins Glen in upstate New York State. The crowd of 600,00 far outnumbered the crowd at the Woodstock festival in 1969.
Ten years and one month later, I photographed the Dead in Toronto and captured this image of Jerry Garcia that remains one of the most sought after images from my archive at www.rockandrollicons.com

Happy 79th birthday to Debbie Harry!

I photographed her twice in 1978 on the cusp of Blondie's success that has never waned.

The portrait was made at the Windsor Arms Hotel in Toronto four months before the band appeared at the El Mocambo. What a perfect venue, as the club was on its own trajectory, hosting many of the bands and artists who rewrote rock and roll.

Sorry to hear about Dee Lippingwell’s recent passing.
She lived and worked in Vancouver and made a name for herself as a bundle of energy and that city’s favorite rock and roll photographer.
Our paths crossed a couple of times over the years and we stayed in touch here on FB. Dee and I recently shared credit with our photo contributions to Bob Wegner’s incredible Max Webster book.
Too often we read about rock and roll celebrities leaving the planet but now it’s someone who helped bring those faces to us in the first place.
RIP Dee.

David Gilmour in NYC.
Not this time. Once I got into the ticket line, WITH a presale code, there were over 27,000 people or bots ahead of me. The available tickets that were available in less than desirable locations, were running between 650 and $900 before fees.
Good tickets if you could grab one quickly enough we’re running about $2700 .
The only ticket I’m likely to get today is for parking in a loading zone .
I’ll wait for the album.

From 'Music History Calendar' On this day-December 15.

1974 Young Frankenstein opens in theaters. When members of Aerosmith take a break from recording the Toys in the Attic album and see the film, they laugh hysterically at the scene where Igor (Marty Feldman) tells Dr. Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) to "walk this way," and the doctor imitates Igor's walk. Returning to the studio, they have the title to the track they've been working on.

I'm so sorry to hear that Myles Goodwyn of April Wine has passed. In the early 70s they were a serious rock and roll band that blazed out of Canada and one of the first groups to give me a shot as a young photographer.
Drop Your Guns, Myles and rest in peace.
