Empire Waist (2024) is Claire Ayoub's body-positive coming-of-age film about Lenore (Mia Kaplan), a plus-sized teen whose hidden talent for fashion design finally gets the spotlight it deserves.
The group heads to the river for a photoshoot. Lenore steps out of the car in one of her own designs — a beautiful sleeveless dress. But she's wearing a jacket over it. Hiding. As always.
Kayla (Jemima Yevu) notices immediately. "Why are you wearing a jacket? The dress is gorgeous. Lose it."
Lenore hesitates. Her arms. Her shoulders. Her body — exposed. But her friends don't let her hide. One by one, they tell her she looks beautiful. She takes a breath. The jacket comes off.
The photoshoot is magic. Lenore laughs. Poses. For the first time, she's not hiding behind fabric. She's just... herself.
Afterward, Charlie (Basso) offers to show Lenore the photos on his camera. They stand apart at first. Then Charlie steps closer. And closer. His face inches from hers. He's going to kiss her.
Lenore panics. She turns and runs. Not because she doesn't like him. Because she's not ready. Because being seen — really seen — is still terrifying.
Charlie stands there, confused. "Why are you running?" Lenore doesn't answer. She just keeps walking, heart pounding, face flushed.
