He was holding a book she once loved, its spine worn like her own quiet heart. Outside, the train moved, metal against metal, a hymn for the unspoken. She smiled faintly to herself, wondering if he knew. By the next station, he was gone, carried into the underground sea of lives she’d never touch again.
