Juvenile Pine Warbler photographed in New Hampshire in early July. This bird is already flying and out of the nest, though you can still see the pale gape flanges at the corners of its bill — a leftover feature from its time begging for food that fades as it matures. Pine Warblers are one of the few warbler species that nest almost exclusively in pine stands, and juveniles like this one tend to stick close to the nest tree while they build up their foraging skills.

Juvenile Pine Warbler, New Hampshire, early July — already flying, with that soft streaky yellow-olive plumage that marks the transition out of the nest. Note the pale gape flanges still visible at the corners of the bill; they linger for a while after fledging as a holdover from begging for food, then fade as the bird matures.

Pine Warblers are one of the few warblers that nest almost exclusively in pine stands, and juveniles tend to stay in the vicinity of the nest tree, working along branches and needle clusters for insects while they sharpen their foraging skills. The plumage here will continue to fill in and sharpen before this bird’s first fall molt.

Three different views of last night’s rising Sturgeon Moon while watching the swallow migration at Parker River NWR.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac: “The August Full Moon is traditionally called the Sturgeon Moon because giant lake sturgeon were most easily caught in North America’s Great Lakes and Lake Champlain during this late-summer period.

Common Nighthawks, striped underwings against that flat blue, in the middle of their peak migration push through the county.

The historic night was August 24th at Page Elementary School (eBird hotspot Pipestave Hill) in West Newbury — 1,200+ nighthawks counted in a single night, a new single-night record for Essex County (which historically doesn’t see much, if any, nighthawk migration). They funnel through on these clear evenings in late August, working the sky for flying insects before the long haul south, and you can pick out the barred plumage and that bold white wing-band even at a distance once they bank into the light. That white bar sits closer to the wingtip than on Eastern Whip-poor-will — one of the quick field marks for nighthawk in flight. Peak movement is expected to hold through the 28th.
