On this Kentucky Derby Day, I’m thinking about one of Philly’s finest—Smarty Jones.
Born in Chester County, trained at Philadelphia Park, and full of heart, he overcame a brutal training injury and the tragic loss of his first trainer to rise to greatness.
In 2004, he captured our hearts by winning the Derby undefeated, then crushed the Preakness with a record-breaking margin. Though the Triple Crown slipped through his hooves at Belmont, Smarty’s grit, spirit, and Philly toughness made him a legend.

Remembering the Timeless Magic of Paul Reubens, AKA Pee-wee Herman

In the realm of entertainment, there are certain individuals who leave an indelible mark on our hearts, captivating both young and old with their unique talents. Paul Reubens, better known as Pee-wee Herman, was one such legend of the 80s, whose recent passing has left us mourning the loss of a truly iconic figure. On this somber day, I pay tribute to the man who brought endless joy and laughter into our lives.
Like a beacon of imagination, Pee-wee Herman embodied the innocence and boundless spirit of childhood. With his high-pitched voice, quirky mannerisms, and ever-present bowtie, he transported us to a world where dreams were realized and adventures awaited. Whether it was on the big screen or the small screen, Pee-wee's contagious energy and comedic genius made us believe in the power of laughter.
So today it was only fitting that in our travels we would make a stop to the place that encapsulates Pee-wee's essence—the Cabazon Dinosaurs, where Pee-wee embarked on his unforgettable quest in "Pee-wee's Big Adventure." As people flock to this whimsical landmark, leaving flowers as tokens of remembrance, it becomes clear how deeply Paul Reubens and his beloved character have touched our lives.
For those who grew up in the 80s, Pee-wee's Playhouse was a sanctuary of imagination. From the talking furniture to the wacky characters, every episode was a kaleidoscope of colors and creativity. Pee-wee taught the importance of friendship, kindness, and embracing our unique quirks. He reminded us to never let go of our childlike wonder, even as the years passed by.
Paul Reubens' portrayal of Pee-wee Herman extended beyond the small screen, as he ventured into films that became instant classics. "Pee-wee's Big Adventure" took us on a madcap journey to recover his stolen bicycle, introducing us to memorable characters like Large Marge and showcasing Pee-wee's unwavering determination. With each scene, Paul Reubens breathed life into Pee-wee, making him a cherished part of our cultural tapestry.
As we bid farewell to Paul Reubens, let us remember the countless moments of laughter and joy he gifted us. Though he may no longer grace our screens with his infectious presence, his legacy will forever live on. Through Pee-wee Herman, he reminded us to embrace our inner child, to find magic in the mundane, and to approach life with a whimsical spirit.

Kudos to the team responsible for organizing the Tacos and Tailpipes Car Meets Charity Car Show. I was honored to photograph Jacky BamBam at the event on Saturday , and witnessed over 4,000 incredible cars at Menard Premium Detailing situated at 125 Industrial Dr, Warminster, PA 18974. All the proceeds generated at each meet are donated to a charity or cause This Tacos and Tailpipes aims to raise funds for Michael Abbott, a local firefighter.
