Little fingers and toes.⁠

Joy, curiosity, seeing things for the first time.⁠
⁠
Sometimes I wish I could just stop time and freeze each precious childhood moment.⁠
⁠
And in some ways I can, so long as I have a photograph of it 📸⁠
⁠
That's why for my family, we print an album of our highlights every year.⁠
⁠
It takes time to scroll through thousands of photos, edit them down to our favorites, and then design an album.⁠
⁠
But it's time well spent because we love having those memories then at our fingertips where we can quickly find them and remember all the good times.⁠

Do you know the one thing we talk about when planning a portrait session that gets put off, and then forgotten, and can cause the BIGGEST problems and disappointments?⁠

When I meet with my families before their portrait sessions, we talk about ALL the fun things:⁠
⁠
✨️ The perfect location⁠
⁠
✨️ The perfect time of day for beautiful light⁠
⁠
✨️ The perfect place to display their family so those smiles can brighten their world every day⁠
⁠
But the one thing that we talk about that gets put off, forgotten, and causes the most REGRET is - the clothes!⁠
⁠
So many families want to keep it easy, everyone wearing white shirts and blue jeans, but when standing together that creates one GIANT white body with multiple heads.⁠
⁠
I've had other families that love the excuse to shop, but their life is super busy, and then they order something on Amazon that doesn't arrive (or fit).⁠
⁠
These and SOOO many other reasons are why I am happy to come to your home, look at your closet or have you text me photos of outfits, and pick at least a good starting point.⁠
⁠
Such as with this family, we knew we'd be in gardens and they loved color - so we created a mix that worked perfectly for their home and the location.⁠
⁠
I know what works in photos, professional photographers always do, and it's no trouble at all to help. ⁠

Why? Because I think that the best photos capture love and laughter, real joy and happiness.⁠
⁠
And you can't get that with a word like cheese 😝⁠
⁠
I want the hugs, giggles, tongues poking out, tickling and bunny ears.⁠
⁠
So I make jokes, or sing (badly), and encourage the kids (and parents) to just relax and have fun with each other.⁠
⁠
Occasionally I will encourage a hug, as I did here, but still try to help it happen naturally AS IF I hadn't asked for it.⁠

I can't believe we almost missed this!!! 😮⁠

The session with Carly was going GREAT, until...⁠
⁠
We had planned to start with photos at Regent University and then move to the Virginia Beach oceanfront.⁠
⁠
Outfits had been discussed and selected, the weather was beautiful, the traffic wasn't even that bad (the benefit of a week day session).⁠
⁠
Everything was going perfectly, until we walked down the beach to the water and realized we had forgotten the 3rd dress - and the sun was about to set!⁠
⁠
Carly was great about it, she walked through the sand as fast as she could back to her car (maybe jogged a little), changed in the car, and made it back to the sand dunes just as the sun started to set.⁠

Love this portrait so much - totally worth a little rush at the end!⁠

In high school and college, I thought that grades and achievements mattered the most for a successful future and career.⁠

But I was wrong.
⁠
I studied and made the Honor Roll and then Honor Society in high school. I was President, Secretary, and Treasurer of multiple clubs and organizations while running track and cross country through high school and working a part time job after school, on the weekends, and every summer since I turned 15. ⁠
⁠
In college I worked for the newspaper and yearbook, was the photo editor for a year, spent 2 summers out of state working for newspapers, and worked full time hours over every holiday break - while earning my bachelor's in photojournalism and a double minor in women's studies and art.

I worked HARD, and was proud of each certificate, award, and promotion.
⁠
But it turns out that hard work doesn't matter as much as...⁠
⁠
✨️ CONFIDENCE ✨️⁠
⁠
Lucky for me, it turns out that professional photography is proven to be one of the fastest ways to improve your self-confidence!
