Built by the Page family in 1725, Rosewell Plantation survived both the American Revolution and the Civil War, boasting in its grandeur and lavish parties. 1916 brought a fire that devoured the mansion, after which it lay abandoned in ruins until 1995 when preservation and study began on the site of this one grand piece of architecture.

Built around 1685, St. Luke's remains Virginia's oldest brick church.

Abandoned after the American Revolution, it wasn't regularly used until about 1820. Surviving several uses both as a church and a Civil War stable, the late 1800s saw the arrival of the large stained glass window featuring John Smith, John Rolfe, James Blair, and Sir Walter Raleigh.

The building fell into disrepair, rendering it almost useless, until the 1950s when it was rescued by the formation of the Historic St. Luke's Restoration, Inc foundation, which maintains it to this day.

Constructed in 1805, New Point Comfort Lighthouse was one of 4 lighthouses built along the Chesapeake Bay. Damaged in both the War of 1812, and the Civil War, a hurricane in 1933 officially cut off the lighthouse from the rest of the island. Due to modern technology, the lighthouse was deactivated in the early 1960s.

The drive up to the lighthouse does not get you very close, as it's private, gated communities all around (something omitted from the brochures). There is a bit of a backwoods boardwalk to this vantage point, where we could see some renovations to the lighthouse's access dock. Apparently there's boat tours to it through some place in town.

This wildlife refuge has been on my list to check out since I've moved here. This past summer, I finally ventured down the coast to the park. It's a serene little nook tucked onto the North Carolina border. Silent beaches, no city, no people, no cars. Just the sea. Plus it's winter here, and it's nice to remember the summer heat.

**Side note. A biker stopped to tell me that there were otters playing in one of the waterways up ahead, and by the time I get there, they had taken off. Eventually I will get to photo wild otters ha.

A look at my summer jaunt to the old West Virginia State Penitentiary. I didn't see any ghosts this time around, but this would definitely be a fun place to tour at night. The stories abound in this place.

Flashback to this place of wreckage in June. I'd heard of this place, but never went. A tornado ripped through this iron train bridge, and the wreckage was turned into a park. The twists and turns of the beams is something to see.

Part of my weekend home in June was venturing back to this place in Linesville, Pa. The sheer amount of carp and waterfowl that congregate here is insane.
