When I was little, my mom once stopped at her favorite antique shop because there was a big banner draped across the front of the building that read: “Going Out for Business.”
Her first stop was the clerk she was friendly with: Really?? I love you guys!
Of course, she had misread the sign. But the play on words did the trick. It brought her through the door. She left with a little treasure wrapped in brown paper and the satisfaction of supporting a place she cared about.
Lately, as I’ve been slogging through my books, I’ve realized something: if I want to keep doing the work I love, I have to go out for business too.
That means handing out my business cards at the local library story-time to other moms, even when my shy self can barely manage, “How old is your baby? They’re so cute.”
It means speaking up about what I do to the human beings I encounter in my day-to-day life, rather than hiding behind my social media or website presence, hoping people somehow find me.
And it also means asking something of you: the families who have welcomed me into your homes and birth spaces, who trusted me to document your most intimate moments.
If your experience with me meant something to you, please tell a friend. Someone you feel would benefit from being seen as lovingly as I saw you. Thanks!
