Town of Devils Elbow nestled between the Big Piney River and the Hiawatha Bluffs

Devils Elbow, Missouri is a historic unincorporated community located in Pulaski County along an original, scenic stretch of Route 66. The community sits inside a sharp, tight meander of the Big Piney River. The area's striking geology and rich logging history define its identity today. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, lumbermen floated large timber rafts down the river. The sharp river curve regularly caused massive logjams. Frustrated rafters dubbed the difficult turn "a devil of an elbow," which stuck as the town's name. The towering limestone and dolomite formations, known as The Hiawatha Bluffs, pictured in the image rise up to 200 feet above the riverbed. They were once designated as one of the "Seven Wonders of Missouri".
