Here’s some more from Dodge City and the museum. The town is 153 years old. Fort Dodge is located just a few miles from Dodge City and thats when the area grew because of several trails that the pioneers used in their movement West. That, along with the Santa Fe Railroad. If you take a ride down a rural road, it may last for several miles before you find an intersection and then you’ll ride another several miles before finding blacktop again. There is an abundance of Red-Tailed Hawks in Kansas and in one section we counted at least 20 or so resting on the side of the road looking for field mice and small rodents to eat.

Left Wichita for Dodge City and see the town that Gunsmoke was based off of this town but none of the episodes were ever filmed there. Visited the museum there which was fascinating with old west memorabilia and photos. Even found Marshal Dillion there. Along the way we spotted artwork on the side of road that was done by M. T. Leggett. While wheat and corn are tops in agriculture, sorghum is also grown and used as a key animal feed. There were huge piles of covered corn not able to be put in silos because they were full. Usually the piles of corn meant an extra good harvest. Found out that the Kansas sunsets are unbelievable with the landscape being so flat, the horizon looked like it was on fire. We covered a lot of ground while there so I’ll be adding some more photos tomorrow from Dodge City.
