East Montpelier Center, Vermont

Yesterday, the clouds in the spring sky were particularly beautiful. I traveled to East Montpelier Center with the hope of using my drone at the Templeton Farm. However, after the drone was in flight, the sun went behind a huge cloud. Giving up on that spot, I next traveled over to the Yellow Barn, known as the Sibley Farm. Here, the sun and clouds were perfect, and I was able to capture the photograph I was looking for.

Being in East Montpelier Center reminded me of several barns that I had previously photographed, and I thought of this short photo essay, “Barns of East Montpelier Center”.
Taking Center Road after leaving Montpelier, we see the old barn framed with the white blossoming apple tree. Continuing on Center Road, we find the well-known Templeton Barn. This beautiful white barn has long been my favorite. Continuing on Center Road, finds the chance to take the reflection of the red barn in the small pool that highlights the coming of spring in all its colors. Lastly, turning right on Lyle Young Road, we arrive at the Yellow Barn with the beautiful clouds.

East Orange, Vermont

Tuesday of this week, I traveled to East Orange, Vermont. East Orange has a definite rural aspect which appeals to me, and I hope to capture it in this photo. Certainly, the center of this photograph is the beautiful yellow church with its unique architecture, but also of interest are the colorful red house and barn, the church cemetery, the old carriage house next to the church for stabling the horse and buggy during church service, and dirt roads, with no asphalt at all.
This village scene has long been a “must-do location” for Vermont photographers from a hillside location. However, in recent years, trees have grown up, and the view is no longer accessible – enter drone photography, giving the old location new life.
Hope you enjoy, and if in Orange County, Vermont, plan to stop by and enjoy the calm, relaxing views. This is a beautiful fall location.

Mint Green Leaves and Red covered bridges
I know I have been on a “mint green leaf” rant, but in some ways, I enjoy this season almost as much as our beautiful fall season. Just as fall has a so-called “peak”, yesterday was peak season for the coming of the “green”. We had had an overnight rain, the sun was bright but still covered by clouds, making it free of shadows, perfect for photography.
The two images feature Northfield Falls Third Bridge, which crosses Cox Brook.
I am also publishing the same location in late February, showing how the landscape has changed in only three months.

Yesterday was a beautiful spring day, with blue skies, mint green leaves, and flowering crab. I have long been interested in this location, especially when the white crab is in full bloom. It is a tricky spot to get the crab, bridge, and yellow house all in the same shot. Yesterday, I used the drone to increase the amount of space allowed to the beautiful white crab apple tree. While the drone was only about 15 feet high, it allowed the camera to capture more of the tree. When I first purchased my drone, this is how I envisioned its use: just getting a slightly different angle rather than high-altitude shots.

Vermont Green with a Pinch of Red.

Well, “Mint Green Leaf Season” finally arrived in Vermont. I love “mint green season”, and I love the color Red, so this spring I tried to find subjects that shared these two colors.
The first image is Northfield Falls and, of course, features the red Station Bridge (center of image) and Second Bridge (bottom of photo). Turkey Hill is in the center, all dressed in its mint green, as is the whole mountain range.
The second image is taken at the Vermont Veterans Cemetery. The veterans' cemetery is a beautiful cemetery. If you have never driven through, I highly recommend it. The photo only shows a small portion of the cemetery. As a veteran, this will become my cemetery.
The third image is the Floating Bridge in Brookfield, VT. When I put the drone up, I did not, repeat did not, see the red truck. I saw the red shed only, so I was most pleased to find a red truck in the center of my image. Sometimes it is better to be lucky than good.

I am trying to be patient. Seems that we here in Vermont have been waiting for the arrival of Spring, when the leaves are mint green, and the flowing crab & apple blossoms are in bloom. Yesterday I couldn’t wait any longer, and even though it was pouring rain, I ventured off to Montpelier, our state capital, to take my annual photo of the tulip show. Warm, even hot weather is predicted for next week, so I will be anxious to be out. Spring comes so slowly, then explodes too quickly, but we all must learn to enjoy each and every day.
Hope you enjoy the rain-soaked flowers in front of the Vermont Capitol building.

Vermont Green

The following three images, all taken this week, highlight the end of stick season and the coming of “Spring Green”.
The first image is of Village Bridge. Built in 1833, it is considered to be the second-oldest Vermont covered bridge, located in Waitsfield. The river is the Mad River, which flows north into the Winooski, on to Lake Champlain, and again north and east into Canada and the Atlantic Ocean.
Traveling over the Northfield Mountain Range, we arrive in Northfield Falls, the home of four red covered bridges. This image captures two of the bridges (Third Bridge in the foreground and Second Bridge at the top of the photo), all nestled in beautiful Spring Green.
Continuing southeast, we arrive at the Kingsbury Bridge spanning the Second Branch of the White River located in South Randolph.

Placey Farm - Newbury, Vermont. This was once considered one of the most photographed spots in Vermont. It was on every Vermont photographer's “to-do list”. It was also close to where I grew up, and I remember, as a boy, watching photographers with their big tripods and huge cameras, a black cloth over the camera and their heads, taking pictures here. I knew at that time that I wanted to be a photographer. The river is the Connecticut River that divides Vermont and New Hampshire, with New Hampshire on the left and Vermont on the right. The mountains in the center include Mt. Moosilauke, one of New Hampshire’s 4000+ ft mountains. This particular spot was also a well-known trading location for Indigenous Americans who had well-defined living areas here on what is called “The Oxbow”.
Hope you enjoy this location. Now that I have the drone, I will be sure to return in different Vermont seasons with hopefully more photos of one of my favorite locations.

These two images are one month apart, illustrating the early arrival of spring. The first image taken in early March is of the Slaughter House CB in Northfield Falls. I went to a workshop several years ago where one of the topics was using “red” in an otherwise white landscape.
The second image was taken yesterday in my backyard as the crocuses made their colorful announcement that “the snow is gone and it is time for spring.”
Hope you are well and looking forward to Vermont’s beautiful spring. It doesn’t last long, so be vigilant and enjoy each day.

Northfield Falls, VT

Yesterday morning saw the landscape covered with plenty of new sticky snow after Friday night's 6-7 inch snowfall. Returning to one of my favorite targets (Third Bridge in Northfield Falls), I decided to take images from the opposite side of the bridge from my normal point of view. Returning home and projecting the image on my computer screen, I was completely surprised to find that I also had captured Second Bridge in the same shot. This is a project that I have long wanted to accomplish, but didn’t even realize it until it appeared, unsolicited and nicely positioned to enhance my intended target of Third Bridge.
Third Bridge and Second Bridge are only approximately 250 yards apart, but I have never seen them photographed within the same image. What is the saying: “I would rather be lucky than good”?
Northfield Falls is the home of four beautiful, red-covered bridges, so if interested in CB’s, please consider stopping by – you won’t be disappointed.
