Originally this page only chronicled the 1970s through black-and-white photography, but it's since expanded to include current photographs by Jeremy Butler.

More at jercomphoto.com . I built a darkroom in my parents' laundry room in 1970s (when I was 16) and began capturing black-and-white photographs for the rest of the decade. Initially, the images on this site were culled from the thousands I shot during that decade. However, in the 2010s I rediscovered my love for photography and began shooting photos and processing them in Adobe Lightroom--much less smelly than my old laundry-room darkroom.

Henry Moore, “Family Group,” 1973. Black-and-White Wednesday on the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter.

I took this photograph during a spring break trip to NYC in 1973. Moore cast the sculpture in 1950, according to the MoMA Website. One of five original castings of this work, MoMA began displaying its copy in February 1951—three years before I was born in NYC. Perhaps my parents took me to see it when I was a baby?

MoMA’s own photograph (color photo below), which appears to be more recent than 1973, shows that the sculpture has been relocated. In my photo, the museum’s windows are in the background, but in MoMA’s photo the garden’s pool and foliage are behind the sculpture.

The shape of its bell tower matches the shape of its front door. Something I never before noticed.

My father, an attorney in Phoenix for over 30 years, relied heavily on his secretary, Grace Meyers. She was efficient and effectively organized—two things he was not.

A remarkably happy worm, considering it’ll either lure a fish onto a hook or die trying.

Behind Anders Hardware Store, 419 Main Ave., Northport, Ala., August 18, 2026 at 8:06:07 AM. Anders is a classic hardware store, established in 1909. I go there for all of my live-bait needs, which, admittedly, are few.

Originally named for a governor who was a Ku Klux Klan member, this building now bears the name of the woman who broke the University of Alabama’s color barrier.

Its inscription: "Religion, morality, and knowledge being necessary to good government and the happiness of mankind, schools and the means of education shall forever be encouraged."

The building housing the University of Alabama’s College of Education was originally named for Alabama governor Bibb Graves when it opened in 1929. Graves was a Ku Klux Klan member and his name was removed from the building in 2022.

It was then named for Dr. Autherine Lucy Foster, the first African American to attend the University.

She was known by her maiden name when she broke the University’s whites-only policy in 1956 and preferred the building use that name.

Black-and-White Wednesday on the JerCom Photo (email) Newsletter: Of course my high school had irrigation. Didn't yours?

It wasn’t until I left Arizona for college that I came to realize how odd it was that my high school and my home were flooded with irrigation water on a regular basis. My home’s subdivision was built on a former grapefruit grove and we had six grapefruit trees in our yard. We also had berms around the perimeter of our yard, which I have also come to realize is not “normal.”

To this day I cannot stand the taste of grapefruit.
